i keep forgetting to switch to this alt account to check out hexbearians (hexbearers?) and my lemmy experience is SERIOUSLY lacking without all the badposting and slop curating.

did you all decide to say "fuck it" to re-federating?!

Two separate questions:

  1. Recently while browsing hexbear on my phone there's been a few times that I click a post and a file download prompt appears, which I rejected each time. iirc it's been only on posts with videos. How can I turn this off and why is this happening in the first place?

  2. How do I turn off auto play for videos? There are many times when I click a post to see the comments and it starts loudly playing a video.

tried clearing cookies and site data. it's been happening since around the time of the domain name panic. hitting the "next" button takes 5+ seconds to load the next page of posts, and if I'm past page 1 then even hitting browser back from a comments page takes like 5-10 seconds to load the page i was just on which is a pain. post bodies and comments load fast, just post lists after page 1 that are slow.

after some cursory testing it seems like only the first page of posts is getting cached. browser back from page 2 to page 1 is fast. page 3 to page 2 is extremely slow. the "previous" button has been broken for me for months and months also fwiw.

what i see when posts are loading, guessing the top page elements are getting cached but posts are getting requested every time (except page 1) and it's slow as hell. not enough into networking to do any more rigorous testing really but i might try.

I wanted to open up a post to discuss the two main methods of federation: allow-list and block-list. As well as see how the majority of users felt with regard to the methods.

Due to some of the issues raised with the method of vote counting this will be considered only a check of user sentiment, not a promise of what to do

I will pin two comments, one in favour of a block-list and one in favour of an allow-list approach to federation.

Before the domain issue we were using an allow-list, this means that any instance that wants to be linked to hexbear must reach out to us or be nominated by a user for addition to the allow-list.

The benefits of this is that we are not automatically linked with any instance that spins up. The downside is that we miss federation with any small lemmy instance as well as with any other activity-pub instance (mastodon, peertube, etc.)

Lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml both use a block-list approach and for what it's worth they have done well, the majority of reactionary instances already block us (lemmy.world, sh.itjust.works, lemmy.ca, sopuli.xyz, slrpnk.net) and the pedo/porn/nazi instance are already on the hexbear block-list.

The biggest upside of a block-list approach is that new single person instances that get created will link up with us without any extra steps, and the biggest downside is that it will add an extra step for moderation (adding a new shitty instance to the block-list after they show their shit)

Within the following spoiler will be the hexbear allow-list and block-list.

Discussion may be had within comments, if you have specific instance additions/subtractions from the allow-list or block-list please comment underneath the respective pinned comment.

For example if you wish to add lemmy.ca to the block list comment under https://hexbear.net/comment/5951093

We are nearing the time when we will be able to have federation as an option again, so we wanted to check in with the user base about this decision.

Since there were some complaints against dean-voting, I would like to try using

"Yea" bit-yay or "Nah" bit-nay

Only the words within " " or the two specified emojis will be counted when tallying the vote.

In the case of federation, we will be using an allow-list again, but are open to using a block-list if the user base is strongly in favour. If you have a preference between allow-list or block-list federation, please include that in your comment

Thank you!

we fucked up (chapo.chat)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

If any users have purchased domain names they can transfer to us now, or share the account credentials for the domain host please message me so i can add the domain you have to the list of options for a domain change.

Hello users of hexbear, or shall i say chapo.chat, we fucked up, and i fucked up like three times making this post.

Yes, hexbear.net has expired. Yes, we were aware of this possibility. We have gradually lost contact with the access owner (prior admin) for the domain registration. We attempted to make a migration plan, but we were disarmed by the reappearance of the party in question in September 2024 and repeated assurances that they would a) transfer credentials and b) continue payments until they were able to do the former.

We accept full responsibility for this. We should have been more aggressive about this and continued our alternative despite these reassurances. This is our fuck up, and we can't offer anything besides our continued apologies and our plan of action going forward and an explanation of what happened:

Over the time of chapo.chat and hexbear.net the admins that purchased the domain, established the donation accounts, and the server accounts have left. One of the primary admins has gone inactive and returned many times, over a year ago some of the newer admins began asking the older admins to give full access to the domain, servers, and donations. These requests were not met, despite warnings of this exact event.

At the moment we do not have access to hexbear.net and there is a strong chance we will not get it back without participating in the auction, which is already over $300. Choosing to abandon the hexbear.net domain will cause federation problems and considerable technical issues which would lead to potential extended downtime.

During this downtime we would be reestablishing access to the new domain (or hexbear.net if we win the auction), access to server ownership, and donation accounts. This would be distributed among a number of admins so that we can prevent this from happening again.

Chapo.chat has the same access problem that led to the current state of hexbear.net so it is to be considered temporary.

I will do my best to answer questions

I'm sure you all remember the very very funny time we voted to ban the admins of DBZero but stay federated with the instance. It's still very funny, but it turns out that banning them has had an side effect that I, at least, didn't consider at the time: their mod actions don't federate anymore either.

See Hexbear post here: https://hexbear.net/post/4342876
After commenting, I went to look at what people were saying on the original post, and as you can see yourself, the post has been deleted on .ee and DBZero. Looking in the modlog over there it was deleted almost immediately after posting, but still exists as a federated post.

The above post is a non-issue and I don't have examples of harmful content making it through, but the implication here is that db0 and unruffled's (and indeed any admin or mod we've banned without defederating from) attempts to remove harmful content will not federate, unintentionally exposing our users to it.

Unless our admins have some way to bridge the gap I'm afraid we may have to defederate in order to maintain the safety of our user base.

Hello users of Hexbear, there have been many changes and some drama the past few months.

The recent changes we've been making have been an attempt to create a more safe and welcoming environment for many demographics that have been overlooked in the past.

For any of our comrades that have been unintentionally hurt in this process, we apologise and hope to find a solution that accommodates as many people as possible while still meeting the needs of the marginalised groups who need a space like this the most.

The intent of this post is to provide a space for all users to air grievances with regard to the site. As well as provide suggestions for specific things that could be changed to address your grievance. Comments insulting the mod team or those without a specific means to address your problem may be removed. No commenter will be sitebanned, unless it clearly breaks the code of conduct.

I don't know, but this comment from @[email protected] has given me some stuff to think about.

People should not think less of you on the base of the amount of sex you have, and you shouldn't either.

This is a nice thought, but insults based on amount of sex are absurdly common. I have seen quite a few people on this site who still do these insults, and it doesn't get removed when I report it. The incel article from a while go was about how we should critique incels for their misogyny rather than them failing to have sex, I see this as pretty similar to the arguments about not body-shaming fascists in that most of the people who will get hit by the insult are not the actual target. From what I remember, that article good job explaining why these insults are harmful and how they hurt a lot of people who they really shouldn't, unfortunately the discussion on that post was very off topic. In my experience, most people who have sex fail to recognize that not everyone who is celibate is an incel ("If so many terrible people have sex and you can't, that must mean you are worse than they are!").

I would say that insults based on amount of sex a person has should not be allowed, but I am very pessimistic about this actually leading to a change in site culture.

Once again, please assume good faith, even if you disagree with the take. If you think I mean something weirdly reactionairy by this post, ask me wether that is what I mean, instead of just saying that's what I mean please.
I don't want this to become a strugglesession, I just feel like this would be a good discussion to have. If this does become hostile, then please lock/remove it mods.

Beware this angel, he acts animalistic on purpose despite being as sentient as you or me, eats demon bones and smells like wet dog

This is a VERY belated Christmas themed drawing that I started in December (shh). I was originally going to have him have his tattoos, but they looked weird so I decided against it. I really enjoyed drawing this, especially the parts with fur! Been trying to improve more on drawing textures lately!

Hey, sorry Carcosa and others if this isn't the right place but I don't have the energy to get myself back on the matrix shit.

I have a very simple proposal which I believe will not stigmatise anyone nor stifle discussion etc, but would benefit a vulnerable segment of the hexbear community. I don't know if this is actually "simple" in practice because I don't know if the codebase supports this.

  • confine all in-depth discussion about drugs and drug use to the c/drugs community
  • remove c/drugs from the local/all feed
  • link, clearly, to c/drugs from the sidebar so it is easy for people to find the community and the information or discussions they are interested in

Speaking as a trans person, this is hands down the best site for my people on the entire internet. We are a statistically vulnerable population, we need safe spaces for our discussions, we can rarely participate in the rest of the internet and/or real life without running into some fuckin bullshit that we shouldn't have to. Hexbear is different. Hexbear provides it all.

Speaking as an active drug addict, multiple-time relapser and veteran fuckup, I believe the recovery community is similarly statistically vulnerable, has to live in a world that normalises alcohol and other types of drug consumption, etc.

Speaking as somebody who was at one time a habitual methamphetamine user, I can attest to the fact that for some of us (and I've heard of this before I ever got that far down the path) the way, for example, news sites / tabloids etc, love to put a meth pipe on the cover or headline article whenever they have an excuse to attract attention- simply seeing those photos can be a relapse trigger.

A photo of a filthy pipe that I did not choose to look at but was right there on the cover of a fucking newspaper while I was in a shop, has in the past triggered me into recurring dreams of getting high, followed by days that feel like lost progress as I found myself fighting intrusive thoughts, impulses and romantic nostalgia trips that would have led nowhere good.

I've lost a lot of people to addiction, a variety of ways. My community, the trans community, notoriously loses a lot of our people to addiction.

I believe it would be wise for us to start posting with consideration about these topics and to be aware that there are users amongst us who are white-knuckling their way through a process of recovery that will take some of them years if not the rest of their lives.

I think it's worth the small burden of effort on the part of the drug using and drug agnostic segment of the community to post with an eye to harm minimisation and that includes protecting our recovering users from relapse triggers.

It should be on us, the posters, and on the site (if it's feasible) to put these discussions in a place which has to be actively sought out to be found.

We can provide the signposts in the sidebar, I don't think acknowledging that drugs exist is the problem here, it's the fact that c/all can throw a curve-ball at you at any time. We shouldn't expect recovering addicts to visit the drugs community and elect to block it, we should hold ourselves accountable and recognise that what might feel like a harmless discussion might be somebody else's trigger point.

I'm thinking very specifically of the ketamine discussion in c/cth yesterday. It's hard to talk about these things without potentially triggering that "romantic" connection some of us have with our drugs of choice. It would be better and more thoughtful to partition these discussions away from the most prominent and accessible feed.

Again, sorry for not visiting on matrix. I hope this post is appropriate. I'm just trying to be informative and I think I've recognised a pretty serious blindspot in our otherwise excellent site culture.

I hope the changes I propose are already supported by the software. I don't think I'm asking for much. I've probably written more on the topic than I needed to. But I don't think this is the sort of change that would or should upset the community.

Please.

Edit: If we have a recovery community it should probably be treated likewise. The post titles alone can be a trigger.

and I don't have a solution for how to treat alcohol in this. It's not a major issue that I've noticed but I just don't know. Alcoholism is one of the most destructive and the most pervasive. But THAT might be a bone of contention for some users so I elect to leave it out of this proposal.

I am not DOSing Hexbear, higher traffic from VPN IP addresses is expected because there's fewer IP addresses per user.

Rate limiting by IP address is an anti-privacy op

Edit: Maybe the rate limit can be increased for login requests?
