In the market for some new hiking boots soon and came across these.

Or suggestions for other affordable GYW hikers? Meermin is another interesting option.

Time to show off some more #Goodyearwelt shoes. It'd be nice if the #Fediverse could have a more active #boots community, as #Reddit had.

These desert boots are from a German brand producing #eco shoes: #EKN. The leather is nice and thick and the soles are comfy. You can even order replacement soles on their website!

I think they're quite stylish and they fit nicely with many of my outfits.

My new-to-me #Meindl Perfekt #hiking boots. Changed laces after I saw the pretty examples here: https://www.magazin-zuerich.ch/vollleder-wanderschuhe-von-meindl (The red-laced ones are Super Perfekt boots, but 🤷)

Used to frequent /r/goodyearwelt, but #Reddit today is... Well. Did learn a thing or two about #boots and #shoes. A Goodyear welt is recognizable by the stitching around the sole, and makes it possible to replace them. Lengthening the life of your boots!

...Should I want a Goodyear welt in my hiking boots in the first place?

I've been using my Iron Rangers for hiking these last few years, which I know is not ideal. But they're the best I have, at the moment. All of the "good" outdoor stores in the Netherlands are mostly filled with boots with cemented soles. European brands I've come across are the following (mostly from here):

  • Lundhags
  • Alico Sport
  • Gronell
  • Meindl
  • Crispi
  • Hanwag
  • Alfa
  • Lowa (Does this brand even have GYW?)
  • Lavitus
  • Trabert
  • Steinkogler
  • William Lennons
  • Meermin

Not all of these are really available (or affordable, ideally I'd want it second hand). And many have cemented soles. Any experiences or recommendations?

These are my winter work boots getting a pre season coat of Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP. I spend the winter on construction sites and brownfields so it can get a little rough on the boots. Obenauf is still probably overkill for my purposes but I generally like it and it holds up well. The leather stays dark which is fine for my true work boots. I don't use LP on my general use boots when I want the character of the leather to still show.
