Hello everyone,

Part 1 is here So this is part 2 of my apps deck. I'm honestly testing the limits of the modbot at this point. But I would like to simply share my FOSS apps "deck" with you:

  • OpenCalc to replace the default calculator
  • Clock to replace the default one
  • FlashDim for flashlight utilities
  • SaverTuner for advanced battery saver
  • Amaze to replace the default file manager
  • FlorisBoard to replace the default keyboard
  • NewPipe for enhanced video experience
  • Seal for video download (using yt-dlp)
  • VLC for media playback
  • Aegis for 2FA management
  • Proton Pass for password management and because I switched to the Proton suite just recently

I managed to fully uninstall the closed counterparts of some of these apps using ADB utilities and this XDA article.

I'm really satisfied by these apps.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT 1: Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I just entered this rabbit hole and I definetely don't wanna get out. Does anyone know a good expense tracker please? (Primarly focused on android but not only)

I am currently using gramophone and it's nice but sometimes it just crashes and I think the UI is a little too simple. I have tried symphony and really liked the player UI but not the main UI and I am not sure if it will still get updates. So can anyone recommend me a good FOSS local music player?

Hi,

some of you may know my app Native Alpha which has been around for a few years.

The latest updates contain a few nice additional features:

  1. The old adblock engine is no longer maintained, the new one allows the user to choose their own selection of adblock lists. (Note: Cannot guarantee any filter list will work, but most in ABP syntax should work. I can recommend Fanboys Lists, Fanboy Ultimate is also the default choice.)
  2. The UI got refreshed: It's now based on Material Design 3, also the main overview is less cluttered with buttons (swipe actions ftw)
  3. You can re-order Web Apps in the main overview (already implemented with v1.4.0)
  4. Websites which have a native Dark Mode (e.g. wikipedia.org) will now automatically follow your system theme.

Fans of alternative app stores will be happy to know that the features pay-walled in Native Alpha Plus (most notably, the Sandboxing feature) is now available for free to anyone who fetches the releases off GitHub, e.g. by Obtainium or if you rely on the IzzyOnDroid repo.

I could not dedicate that much time to work on the app in the recent years, however, the development definintely didn't stop. Some features which you can expect to see in the following releases are: Custom CSS, Custom Javascript, a "Find on Page" function and further UI improvements (edgeless design, dynamic coloring).

Enjoy!

To those unfamiliar with the app so far, a quick summary:

List of features:

  • Shows any website in a borderless full-screen window using Android System WebView.
  • Create home screen shortcuts and retrieves icons in suitable resolution.
  • Various settings (JavaScript, cookies, adblocking, location/camera/microphone access) can be set for every web app individually
  • Navigation with multi-touch gestures while browsing.
  • Opt-in adblock using an AdBlock Plus custom webview.
  • Less memory footprint and no privacy-invading app permissions in comparison to native apps
  • Dark mode for Android 10+
  • Open-source, released under GPL v3/later

Paid features:

  • Sandbox containers: Web Apps are loaded in fully separated sandboxes, cookies or other data are not shared with other Web Apps
  • Kiosk Mode: Fullscreen with menubars hidden
  • Experimental "Force Dark Mode" also available for websites (configurable with respect to day-time)

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to Litube, which I’ve been using for a while now after discovering it on F-Droid. If you’re someone who’s tired of the microG setup or trying to find a good alternative to Vanced, Litube might be what you’re looking for.

It’s a dedicated YouTube web fork app for Android. No microG needed, no complex setups. Just install, sign in with your Google account, and boom—you get access to your subscriptions, history, and even what feels like premium features (ad-free, background play, etc.).

I’ve tried other alternatives like NewPipe and Brave browser, and while they have their strengths, Litube stands out as a standalone app. Unlike YouTube in Brave, which often reloads or loses playback state, Litube holds well in memory, resumes playback smoothly, and offers a more “native app” experience.

The fact that you can log in and access all your subscriptions directly is a game-changer compared to NewPipe, which lacks real sign-in support.

That said, it’s not without its quirks. For example, when playing videos back-to-back, sometimes the second one picks up the timestamp from where the last one ended. Not a dealbreaker, but worth noting.

Still, overall, this is exactly the kind of open-source YouTube client I was looking for—simple, effective, and does the job well. A big shoutout to the dev.If you’re in the FOSS ecosystem and want a no-fuss YouTube experience, give Litube a shot!

TextLauncher is part of the F-Droid repository.

the source code leads to the GitLab repository.

and if you try to download the latest release from there, the .apk file has a Bitcoin icon, the app's name is "BitAC", and the package name is "ademar.bitac".

wtf?

this is hella crazy, lmao

Reading news about people's phones getting seized and searched got me thinking about the problem of taking photos at protests or what ever else.

I looked around and couldn't find an existing app that ticked all the boxes, so I wrote one:

FDroid

GitHub

Google Play

or snapsafe.org

This keeps all photos locally on your device, in app private storage. No auto-uploads to Google Photos, or even app backup.

The photos are strongly encrypted using hardware backed keys where available.

The app requires a PIN separate from your device PIN. So even if your device has been confiscated and is unlocked, the photos taken in this app are still protected.

There are other features such as auto-face blurring, and a "Poison Pill" which is an alternative PIN, when entered deletes all of your photos.

The aim to provide real security in some of the more extreme scenarios.

I am an amateur photographer, I love taking pictures just to take pictures. I have a bit of a higher bar for a camera app, I can't have something really simple. I need something with a little more UMPH! I am using Fossy Gallery at the moment, which you can't open via Stock Camera to view photos you've taken. Which is a bit of a pain, not going to lie. So I am looking for a new camera application to replace it.

I really would love one that has a level that shows up, to make sure the photo is level. On top of hitting the power button twice to bring up the camera.

Thank you so much ahead of time!

I'm pretty new to FOSS, and honestly I'm loving it. I was always looking for simple apps, and I could never find them on the Play Store. Now I know why, mostly? It's because they are all on Github for free! Anyways...

Right now I'm still using Google authenticator, and I'm considering changing.

I've heard people suggest not using it due to security flaws. Their argument was that it didn't have a lock feature when opening the app. They have added that now, although it's hidden in settings. The other one was not being able to back up your codes. Now it has online backup... Regardless of these flaws being fixed, I am considering moving to another Authenticator app.

Right now I've only really looked at Aegis. I really like the fact it can do any authenticator type, I'm not just restricted to Google's. Some places don't even have Google's as an option.

Anyways, what are you favorite authy applications? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I'm just getting into Foss, pretty heavily actually. I'm loving some of the new apps I've discovered! So I wanted to know what your favorite FOSS apps are this year? It could be something you've had for years too. Can't wait to discover more amazing apps!

Hi there, I'm just digging into FOSS now. I originally downloaded Simple Gallery a few years ago because moving from the LG gallery to Google Photos was just awful. I loved simple gallery, but have come to discover is not FOSS. Alternative suggestions please?

I made a simple batch script called Shiz-ify that helps users enable Shizuku on Android devices via ADB. It automatically detects your connected device and handles authorization in seconds. If you’re looking for an easy way to streamline Shizuku setup, check it out on GitHub! https://github.com/sorpyr/Shiz-ify

I recently upgraded Whisper Input method editor to support preselection for 40 languages.

These are the languages on which Whisper has been trained at least 100 hours or more.

Preselection helps to improve quality especially on languages with few training hours.

For use as an input method I also added an automatic mode with voice activity detection. So you do not need to start/stop recording.

With the end of DivestOS also GMaps WV had been discontinued by the developer. I decided to take on maintainership for this app and I am happy to announce there are new updates on F-Droid.

It is published under GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 as before.
