if you read ecology books printed in the 70s and 80s, they were absolutely convinced that whales and tigers would not survive the century. There’s a whole plot in Star Trek about how whales are extinct actually. Here in Argentina, we were sure that yaguaretés would have gone extinct. It was thought that rainforests would be forever lost, because there was no way that such complex ecosystems would be restored.

Now, you can go to Península Valdés and find that the whale population there is growing year after year, people can see them from their windows. In Iberá, where yaguaretés were extinct for over 70 years, there’s now a population of 35 and growing, after being reintroduced just five years ago. As for rainforests?

We’ve becoming very, very good on restoring them. Natural environments, when given space and time to heal, can return to that they were. And after all, all natural enviroments are managed by human societies. It is up to us to implement a good management, un buen gobierno.

I firmly believe our children and grandchildren will see a restoration of Earth like never before.

Millions of people are working on this. You can learn about it, perhaps even become one of them. Or be a pointless doomer in my ask box. Your choice.

if there are people who care, it’s never a lost cause. at one point, kākāpō, a nocturnal flightless parrot species from aotearoa, were thought to be entirely extinct for decades. until 1977, where booming calls from males were heard on the small island of whenua hou. now, thanks to people who care so much they dedicated their lives to caring, kākāpō numbers are close to 300. despite the setbacks. despite the small gene pool causing infertility and health problems. people cared so fucking much that they survived. this is one of COUNTLESS, countless similar stories. I’m studying ecology so that I can go into conservation and all around me, every day, I see people who care enough to put years of their lives into learning about and solving environmental problems. I don’t know man. hope isn’t just some nebulous thing. it’s tangible if you do something with it.

The state of the world haunts the back of my mind every day. I can never push it out.

I can feel brief moments of joy, but I can't say I'm ever happy, not while the world is like this.

Maybe that very world is a dystopia where the U.S.'s iron grip is so solidified that it becomes clear that nothing can ever challenge it, so no one has any expectations that things "could" get better anymore. The same world where the unbreakable, invincible Israeli empire is established in the middle east and maybe beyond. Constant anxiety is replaced by a feeling of constant dread and sadness, as "U.S.-realism" or "colonial-realism" "genocide-realism" becomes the law of reality.

At that point, the only real option is to "escape" from this hellhole.

Everything is boring, slop or a passing fad. Every thing I'm good at is not good enough to make cash so It leads to me getting burnt out while trying to improve. I've just been feeling useless and unhireble.

The student movement in my country (Serbia) has been nothing but a unserious college party rather than an actual "rebellious movement". So I'm probably losing my first year due to the blockades going on for more than half a year. Doesn't help that I'm from a village so I don't relate much to city students but that's probably some class interest shit. My org is doing kinda slow since the students kinda took over everything pretty quickly. So there's not much we can do there since the students embraced the liberal brainworms.

Also don't want to vent much about It but I don't really have any friends irl. I feel like everyone just moved on with their lives without me. I only got like one friend who checks in on me but eh I feel like a burden so I don't really bother asking out to hang out much.

Only good thing that happened to me so far is I'm going to driving school and I passed the first part, that being the theory test. So I got the practical test left to do. That's about It really.

It's really cool that 99% of products aren't even what they say they are. Very cool to spend money on something and then get something totally different.

It doesn't matter where it's from or how much you spend either, everything is either low quality or not what it said it was.

Just below Greenland is a menacing stretch of water known as the Cold Blob. As the planet heats up, the Cold Blob remains a spooky outlier — positioned right above the area where the Atlantic Ocean’s so-called conveyor belt is supposed to switch back and head south.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current, or AMOC for short, comprises an enormous system of currents that carries water and nutrients across the world and plays a large part in stabilizing the global climate. For years, scientists have warned that the AMOC was slowing down, possibly nearing collapse. The Cold Blob is the most immediately visible proof of its decline, likely a result of Greenland’s melting glaciers, but research on the deep water current’s strength over recent years has varied wildly

The stakes could hardly be higher. Should the current break down, the most frightening predictions describe a world thrown into chaos: Drought could destroy India, South America, and Africa; the Eastern Seaboard of the United States would see dramatic sea level rise; and an arctic chill would spread across Europe.

Part of what makes AMOC’s behavior so hard to forecast is that consistent monitoring of the current didn’t begin until 2004, so the historical data is limited. When researchers run models to examine AMOC’s behavior in the past, they sometimes get baffling results. “The new models aren’t working for AMOC,” said David Thornalley, a paleoclimatologist at University College London, who wasn’t involved with the latest research. “Some people would say we don’t 100 percent know what AMOC did through the 20th century.”

Scripps Oceanography scientists calculated a May monthly average of 430.2 ppm for 2025, an increase of 3.5 ppm over May 2024’s measurement of 426.7 ppm. Scientists with NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory reported an average of 430.5 ppm, an increase of 3.6 ppm over last year.
