Hi all! Hoping I’m asking this in the right place — I’m part of a global video production team, and we’re currently looking for a long-term storage solution for our cold archive. I’m relatively new to NAS/storage infrastructure, so apologies if I misuse any terms!

We shoot a high volume of content each year — 2024 alone generated about 150TB of assets (footage, project files, etc.). We currently use a cloud-based platform for editorial and work-in-progress files, but need a physical, on-prem solution to store archived assets for the long haul.

Right now, we’re running:

  • 2 x QNAP TVS-1282T3 units (each with ~75TB)
  • Each connected to a QNAP DL-800C expansion (~110TB)
  • We’ll max these out by the end of 2025 once we finish archiving 2024

We’re looking for a new solution that can:

  • Store at least the next 2–3 years (so ideally 400–500TB total)
  • Be expandable as our needs grow
  • Function as cold storage — speed is less of a priority than reliability and scale
  • Be reasonably user-friendly (we’re a creative team, not full-time IT pros)
    • EDIT: We have an IT department! But unfortunately there's a lot of turnover in IT (the person who installed our existing QNAPs years ago was long gone by the time I started at my job, we begged them to help us out since nobody knew how to access them but they said no/couldn't figure it out, so I had to learn how to use them myself) so I want to make sure that it would be easily understandable if/when someone takes over my job!

I’ve reached out to a few vendors (Synology, QNAP, SNS), and quotes so far have ranged anywhere from $40K to $100K, depending on the level of performance and scalability. That said, I’m wondering if there are better or more cost-effective options? Would something like a large DAS with 20–24TB drives work for us, or do we need to stick with the same/similar current NAS system? Is there anything better and expandable?

Would love any recommendations on setups, brands, or pitfalls to avoid. We’re in the process of cleaning up our archive — keeping only final exports and essential assets for older projects, but we aim to preserve the past two years of production in full, including all raw footage and project files.

Hoping to find the best path forward! Happy to clarify anything I’ve missed! :)

So, if I got all of this right, it looks like a guy named Steve Terry got backstage/media passes to Woodstock 1999 and recorded his raw experience. I remember this time period well, and this is some of the most amazing footage I've seen yet. Basically v(hs)logging before it was vlogging.

About a year ago, a guy named Mark bought all of his tapes that sat in storage for 25yr and over the past year he has been uploading them. It looks like Part 10 of 10 was uploaded a couple weeks ago, so the Woodstock footage is now complete. I was super happy to add this to the personal archive.

I think this is fascinating, and I thought some of you would too so wanted to share. Enjoy!

I have about 100 VHS tapes that are a combination of tv shows, movies, etc recorded off of broadcast tv. All labeled on the label of the tape. With the chance of some home movies mixed in somewhere.

I have zero time or “proper equipment (s-vhs, tbc)” to archive the tapes, and commercial services won’t touch anything that is trademarked media.

Any suggestions? I struggle tossing them with the amount of broadcast history that could be there.

A few years ago I bought a motherboard with 6x m.2 slots hoping that I'll be able to populate it with 16TB m.2 sticks in the near future. Here we are today, still stuck with 8TB m.2 drives.

Is there any movement in the industry to offer 16TB m.2 to consumers? The datacenter alternatives use a different form factor and are way too expensive.

Hi all, I created a GUI application named Kemono Downloader and thought to share it with you all for anyone who may find it helpful. It allows downloading content from Kemono.su and Coomer.party with a simple yet clean interface (PyQt5-based). It supports filtering by character names, automatic foldering of downloads, skipping specific words, and even downloading full feeds of creators or individual posts.

It also has cookie support, so you can view subscriber material by loading browser cookies. There is a strong filtering system based on a file named Known.txt that assists you in grouping characters, assigning aliases, and staying organized in the long term.

If you have a high amount of art, comics, or archives being downloaded, it has settings for that specifically as well—such as manga/comic mode, filename sanitizing, archive-only downloads, and WebP conversion.

It's open-source and on GitHub here: https://github.com/Yuvi9587/Kemono-Downloader

Hello Hoarders,

My relative recently passed away, and he was a lifelong data hoarder. He started collecting media sometime in his 40s and continued until he passed away at the age of 76. Over the years, he built up a 17TB library of shows, videos, and random clips. There is the mainstream stuff, but a large portion of it is very niche or obscure.

He had a unique taste and a habit of grabbing things that most people wouldn’t think to save. There’s a mix of older TV content, random YouTube videos, lesser-known documentaries, and some hard-to-find stuff you just don’t see circulating anymore. While a lot of it might not appeal to the general public, I don’t feel right just deleting it, as it feels like erasing something he really cared about and spent a lot of time building.

So I’m reaching out to see if there is anyone who would be interested in helping preserve or archive it. I don’t have the resources or background to properly sort through and backup it all, but I would love to find someone who does. (For what it's worth, the content is quite well organized already, but my main goal is to make sure it lives on)

Let me know if you’re interested or have ideas for how to approach this.

Thanks.

Auto generated return labels from the Seagate store have the wrong address. My returns are bouncing around 500 miles from where they're supposed to be. UPS claims to have corrected the address so hopefully they'll make it where they need to go. 95014 is not Torrance, CA- hopefully the street address is correct.

I want to avoid link rot on my websites and discussions with others, so I like to make sure that anything I link to has a version in the Wayback machine. (Or archive.is, or some other archival site.) Doing this manually is a pain, so I'd like to have an extension that automatically archives any page I visit. (Ideally only if no archived version already exists, to avoid wasting their storage space.)

I haven't been able to find any though. Does anybody know of one?

I am not personally a data hoarder. But as the new administration removes everything they can from the internet that they personally dont like. It is honestly so great to see the people in this sub working hard to preserve content.

So this is just an appriciation post. You guys are the silent heros that no one knows are fighting for us.

Links are good, torrents are good! Highest priority should be videos from government-controlled sources and archives.

Trump Instructs Republicans to 'Erase' January 6 Riots From History, Congressman Says

https://www.latintimes.com/trump-instructs-republicans-erase-january-6-riots-history-congressman-says-583747

edit: The above article apparently refers to a plaque commemorating the Jan 6 riots. So there’s no evidence that Trump ordered the erasure of Jan 6, but I could easily see him ordering that, so I guess take this as a training drill to preserve this evidence!

R/DataHoarder on January 31, 2021 created a compilation of 1 TB of videos into a torrent magnet link, you can read about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/s/TzzSdLhbXI

Edit 2:

Non American Redditors, please help! Make sure to seed this into the end of time so we Americans can never forget!

Here’s a link to the magnet link for the compiled torrent:

This might be a dumb question, so sorry if it is, but why are we still using HDD over SSDs?

I know SSDs have a higher cost, but that’s usually because of their smaller form factor, trying to shove 1TB in something smaller than my fingers.

What I am mainly curious about is why isn’t there an SSD that fits the 3.5” form factor so that the drives can go in NASs and servers, but is filled with 16TB of Solid State memory over Hard Drive?
