While Charlie Brooker might be best known by a wider audience for his science fiction anthology series Black Mirror, the English writer and satirist has a back catalogue that spreads far and wide. Amongst his writing credits on the likes of Brass Eye and Nathan Barley is a hidden gem, a satirical take on the detective genre, A Touch of Cloth.

Arriving a year after Black Mirror first aired on Channel 4, A Touch of Cloth was written by Brooker and Daniel Maier, who had previously worked on Harry Hill’s TV Burp. With the two comic writing masters behind the show, A Touch of Cloth sees John Hannah play police detective Jack Cloth, and Suranne Jones play his colleague Anne Oldman.

“It’s a gag-packed spoof of dark British detective serials in the sort of Messiah, Wire in the Blood mould,” Brooker had once told The Guardian around the time A Touch of Cloth was being released on Sky One back in 2012. “The idea was to do something that was just outrageously stupid as opposed to dark or satirical.”

TV doctor Michael Mosley, known for popularising the 5:2 diet, has gone missing while on holiday on the Greek island of Symi, his agent confirmed.

Adoption is a long, hard road for most people who try it. For a same-sex couple, one of whom is barely concealing some deep trauma, it is longer and harder still. Daf James’s revelatory and loosely autobiographical drama follows Sion Daniel Young’s performance artist, Gabriel, and his partner, an accountant called Andy (Fra Fee), as they start the process. It is funny, emotionally acute and at times heart-wrenching – particularly when they arrive at an activity day and are presented with a brochure of children, each innocent face hiding a tragic story. For his follow-up to Blue Story, Rapman is going big. The multi-talented creator announced himself as a filmmaker to watch with his hit debut feature film – earning sizeable box office and a raft of positive reviews, despite controversial cinema bans on his tale of childhood friends driven apart by gang violence. (A screening of the film in Birmingham was itself the site of a conflict, sparking a safety outcry.) His latest project, Supacell, isn’t a film but a Netflix series – an original show about a group of South Londoners who develop superpowers, exploring how their lives are forever changed.

While the idea of ordinary people receiving extraordinary abilities is a familiar format, Rapman is bringing his own personal perspective to it – while drawing from what came before in beloved shows like Heroes and Misfits. “I loved Heroes,” he tells Empire. “It was the closest to my image of what I thought a show about superpowers should be like. It was a massive inspiration.” And while he’s bringing in genre elements, the realistic underpinnings of Blue Story are set to remain. “I’ve always been a massive fan of superheroes,” he says. “I just wanted to do something a little more grounded. Something you could watch and think, ‘If I had powers, I would probably end up doing what he’s doing.’”

Among the sprawling cast of characters, there’s Tosin Cole’s time-travelling Michael, Nadine Mills’ telekinetic Sabrina – and, as seen above, Josh Tedeku’s Tazer. He’s a character who begins as the leader of a street gang – but has a bigger destiny in store. “People say, ‘We’ve had enough of this gang stuff,’ and I get it,” Rapman says. “I could never write a show in South London, and not show that world. I saw that world for 20 years of my life. For me not to put that in, I would be hiding a piece of myself that I know exists.” He has long-term plans for where the character goes next. “I’ve got such a journey I want Tazer to go down. I want to take this guy out of this world. But you can’t ever reach any teenagers or kids doing this if they don’t believe them from the beginning.”

However, bassist and newly qualified doctor Amina (Anjana Vasan) is in her “villain era” so can make anything happen. Then a rival band come to the fore with the undeniably cool name of Second Wife. I wasn't expecting quality tv, but was still taken aback when I realised one of the people on this show, traveling across the globe alone to meet the online "love of their lives", is a 17 year old, who met a woman 11 years his senior when he was 15.

How this ever made it past not one, but probably several brainstorming-new-shows and then production meetings, to actual air, is infuriating, especially since "duty of care" is a joke to these people..

I feel dirty having watched that.
