I’m wanting to watch a YouTube play through of a historically-accurate, brutally difficult bastard of a board game worshipped by rigid enthusiasts with no sense of humor.

The rule book should read like the 1980 Chilton’s Auto Repair Manual and be so bone dry that it dehydrates fresh figs into playable mini figs.

It should be so grossly unappealing that leaving it out around small children will pose no threats of disruption or choking. The cat will avoid this room. So should your priest.

Do you understand? I want to regret asking this question.

Just want to open a discussion regarding the boardgame community when it comes to how we tend to put so many "checks" on negative reviews, which some how never applied to positive reviews.

The checks:

  1. "How many games have you played?" "Have you played it more than once?"

If someone played the first time and said "wow this game is amazing", everyone just claps and said welcome to the club. When possibly the game could get stale after the 5th play, because no variety.

Flipping it to negative reviews, apparently one have to play more than 5 times before the community is, "ok, you played enough times - we can accept it". But wait!!!

  1. "Did you play with the right rules?" "Maybe you got something wrong?"

A good review could also have got a rule wrong, and made the game more fun. Say someone played Nemesis the first time with all the tiles faced up, and then walked away saying they have an amazing time, and Nemesis is great! But the community will not bother to ask if they played a rule wrong, because we're occupied with "told you it's a good game!"

While for negative reviews, one have to validate - yes I played the game more than 2, less than 100. I check and got all the rules right. Here's a video of our session for you to scrutinize. Yet still ...

  1. "No you definitely missed something", "It's a you problem".

Even after all the checks and validation, it is still very hard for the community to just accept, "yeah it was not a great game".

So, why do we do this?

And, is there a game that's just bad for you, but some how the community is more busy with correcting you, rather than just accept it and move on?

What are some of the most elegant board games in your opinion? I define elegance in a board game as simplicity of rules, dead easy to teach to new comers, and game-play depth, meaning the game has VERY high reply-ability, and you can get as deep into strategy as you want. Games I would consider highly elegant:

  • Concordia: On your turn, choose one of your cards in your hand, do what it says, then put it down infront of you

  • Hansa Teutonica: put or move one or more cubes anywhere on the board

  • Watergate: pick a card, either use it for the value or do what the card says and move the piece that it says.

The other day, my wife picked up a game for me for my birthday (Wingspan Asia) and a game for us to play with the kids (Outfoxed). It lead us to a fun discussion about how differently we purchase games.

I start with heavy research. I will usually watch a review or two, a how to play video, and read part or all of the rule book. Then, I compare the game against the rest of my collection to ensure that its a unique enough experience that we will play it somewhat consistently. After I've determined that I'm interested in the game, I will add it to a list for my next online order, then buy it with a pile of other games that equal $200+ to get free shipping.

My wife walks into a board game store, find a box that she likes the look of, skim the back of the box for 30 seconds, then buys it. If the game is along the same lines as something we are already familiar with (like Wingspan Asia vs regular Wingspan) she will snap buy it without even looking at the back of the box!

I'm curious what other people's experiences are. Do you guys tend to do a lot of research before the purchase, or do you snap buy?

Hey guys,

my boyfriend's birthday is coming up this month and he recently revealed to me that he really enjoys board games (we've only been together for a few months, so we still have a lot to learn about each other). I want to buy him one that he would enjoy, but I am lost since I don't play board games.

He told me he particularly enjoys these games: Exploding Kittens, Catan, Carcassonne, Terraforming Mars, Trails of Tucana, Citadel, and Karak.

For more context about his likes, he loves to read, play chess, and he studies economics. Which I bring up beacause he told me he enjoys the "probability aspect" of board games.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could get him?

Thank you <3

FAQ

I live in Colombia/Canada/Belize/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!

Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.

Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?

Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.

Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?

Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).

Can I donate all my money to you?

No

Can you help me promote my game?

Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.

Your list is full of errors and now the Internet is full of cats!

Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on Reddit karma, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

What's in and what's out? Let's talk about what new games have you played this month and what made them great (or not so great). Do you see them standing the test of time?

On the flip-side, what did you get rid of this month and why'd you let them go? Did the game not gel with the group, did you just need more space on your shelf, or was there something else wrong with the game?

So, I live in a small town in Canada. My wife and I own our home that we could sell for roughly $400k CAD. There is a building in the middle of town; prime location that is listed for $370k. However, it has been listed for quite some time and will likely sell for closer to $320k-340k. So, we're considering selling our home to buy this commercial building and keep our same mortgage. The building has a decent apartment above with 2 bedrooms and a small backyard for our 2 dogs. The main floor has a bit over 500 sq ft store front and a basement that could be used as storage. The basement is pretty dingy, but we could potentially renovate it and use it for board gaming.

On a side note, my wife doesn't drive, so I usually drive her to work or she has to walk if I can't drive her. The location is a minute walk to her work. So, she would still be working while I run the store most of the time. Normally, I wouldn't even consider this idea if we had to rent or purchase the storefront. But, if we can live and work in the same building it makes more sense. So, my small town only has a population of around 3000 people or less. There are many surrounding areas and it sees plenty of tourism due to it being in between all the bigger cities. Being that it's a small town, a lot of people complain that there is nothing to do here. People like to go hunting, fishing, dirt biking, ATV, etc. However, there's just as many people who don't do that sort of thing and find themselves bored and not fitting in.

So, I should also mention there are no other game stores in my town. In fact, there isn't even an electronics store anymore. "The Source" was sold a couple years ago to an older lady who didn't have any interest in that, so she turned it into some other store. The closest thing this town has is a pawn shop that sells the odd used retro game. So, I'm thinking we would sell a multitude of things including used/CIB retro games, newer games/consoles, trading cards, board games, DnD/Pathfinder books, comics, plushies, and other merch. If enough people in the town are into wargaming, we could get into 3D printing figures for customers too. My wife and I have talked to plenty of people about their thoughts on it and they're all super stoked about coming to our store to play games and be a customer.

We've done some small businesses from home as a hobby, but haven't done anything close to this scale yet. So, we have a lot to learn for sure, but it wouldn't change the cost of our mortgage, so we have some wiggle room for failure. Being that it's a small town, word gets around really fast so marketing would be very easy. So, getting customers shouldn't be an issue, but maintaining a constant inventory, getting good distributors, etc. But, I don't expect huge profits. I'd even be happy with equal profits to a minimum wage full-time job if it means I get to do something I truly enjoy.

If anybody has some advice on the matter, I'd highly appreciate it! Things like, the best distributors to use in Canada. Other products or services I could offer, etc. I considered the idea of hosting tournaments with prizes, but I realize I'm not allowed to take admission fees for that as it could be seen as gambling. Thanks again to anyone who can offer advice for my wife and I :)

Introduction

My wife gifted me the scratch off poster of the BGG Top 100 Games over a year ago. I took this as a calling to set out and try as many new games as I could manage over the past 18-months. I was able to notch 50+ different games. Some of these I played digitally on Board Game Arena, and others I was able to play a physical version with friends, or via my personal collection which has started growing at a concerning rate. I would like to share my findings below. I’ve included a full list in the order of how much I enjoyed each game along with notes about if I played it online or solo. Also added some superlative categories. Superlative categories include (1) Best Family Friendly Buy, (2) Best Solo, (3) Best Heavyweight Strategy Game, (4) Best Game for Couples, (5) Best Game Overall, and (6) Editor's Choice Award. I included a write up for the winners and will add some additional notes in the comments section for Honorable Mentions.

Hopefully this write up will guide folks towards games which I consider great. Also, would love to hear if my rankings, and apparent sensibilities, point towards another game which is missing from this list. Enjoy!

Best Family Friendly Buy

"Quacks of Quedlinburg" – This was a surprise hit among my friend group. It’s a wholesome bag builder game with a fun push your luck element. The rules are pretty easy to grasp, and the theme is also family friendly. One of the best things about this game is everyone mostly acts simultaneously which makes it more pleasant to guide new players through the experience. The gameplay actually reminded me a lot of Dominion which is high praise in my mind. It hits this magical sweet spot where it’s easy for children to pick up and play, but also has enough depth to make it highly replayable for adults. My gaming group circle back to this one super often and everyone really enjoys it.

Honorable Mention: "Azul" and "Isle of Cats"

Best Solo Game

"Mage Knight" - This game is an absolute monster. It combines deck building, hand management, RPG elements, and exploration in a really satisfying package. You have to make challenging hand management decisions and defeat enemies in order to rapidly level up your character as you explore and unlock new map tiles. Ultimate goal for the base game is to find and conquer city tiles that require a very difficult combat scenario to win. Mage Knight has a hugely complicated combat system and rules. I watched about 2 hours of "how to play" videos prior to starting and still had my phone out every few minutes during the first play through: constantly checking rules clarification. In addition this was the single most expensive board game in my collection at the time of purchase ($100+). Barrier to entry is extremely high and definitely not for the faint of heart. That said, it was a very cool experience and subsequent plays were much smoother and more satisfying. I think this game would be awful as a multiplayer game because individual turns can take ages with lots of thought and calculation required. A single campaign runs 2-4 hours so it's a big commitment, but when turns come together allowing you to overcome extremely difficult situations, well... it can be a really magical experience. Over the past couple months I’ve circled back to this one several times to try out new scenarios and difficulty levels and have always enjoyed my time at the table.

Honorable Mention: "Spirit Island" and "Aeon's End"

Best Heavyweight Strategy Game

"Terra Mystica" - This game is absolutely amazing. I'd never heard of this game before, but after several plays it is easily a new favorite. It feels like big boy "Settlers of Catan". I played "Settlers of Catan" to death in high school, and this felt like a wonderful progression. Basically you play on a hex map and are competing for hexes to build up settlements and towns. The game is asymmetrical, and each player represents a different mythical civilization like dwarves, giants or witches. Each civilization has a preferred terrain they like to live in and they must terraform a hex to their preferred type before building there. A mountain tile might cost dwarves 1 cost to terraform, 2 for witches, and giants can build there immediately for 0 terraforming cost as it is their preferred type already. The strategy is satisfyingly deep and luck has been completely removed. It's definitely a complex game, but it is so well designed with visual aids that I quickly had a good understanding of how to play. Can't recommend this one highly enough. Apparently "Terra Mystica" was a foundational inspiration for "Scythe" and its direct spiritual successor, "Gaia Project", is also fantastic. "Gaia Project" is basically "Terra Mystica" in space with a couple of minor tweaks and improvements. Most prominent among the changes are a dynamic game board instead of a fixed map, and a reworked tech track to invest in. In the long-run "GP" is probably the better of the two games, but I personally prefer the fantasy flavor to the sci-fi flavor. Both are truly excellent and play very similarly. "GP" does have a solo mode though so it would probably be the one to buy.

Honorable Mention - "Twilight Imperium (4th Edition)"

Best Game For Couples

"Welcome To..." - This category could best be described as 'which game will my wife actually play with me'. "Welcome To..." is the easy favorite even though it lands outside the BGG Top 100. We played this more than any other title over the past few years and still enjoy sharing a bottle of wine and playing this one for a relaxing evening. "Welcome To..." is a flip and write about designing the best neighborhood. Player interaction is almost non-existent, so it's more like simultaneously solving the same dynamic Sudoku puzzle and then checking at the end to see who did it better. This is ideal in my household as my wife doesn't enjoy any games which are "mean". At $20 this is an easy recommend for some good bonding time. I've sent copies to several of my married friends and they've all seemed to enjoy it as well.

Honorable Mention - "Patchwork" and "Dominion"

Best Game Overall

"Spirit Island" - This is a top contender for my favorite game of all time. Thematically, artistically, strategically... it just checks every box. In this game you take on the role of a Spirit god trying to repel colonial invaders from your island. It can be played solo or cooperatively with up to 4 teammates. All the game mechanics are super satisfying and even the random elements seem fair and balanced. The box comes with a heap load of different scenarios and possible spirits to play as, each with unique powers and abilities. Each spirit feels so different and I love how their powers often align thematically (for instance the ocean spirit's attacks mimic tides ebbing in and out.) So much to love and admire with the design. I think the game is at it's best with 2 players as it is fun to see how the different spirits can support and play-off one another. However, I find this one difficult to play 2-handed and will usually feel burnt out after doing so. Usually I can't stand cooperative games that don't have an abundance of private/hidden information for each player. "Spirit Island" is the rare exception because there is just enough going on to make quarterbacking untenable. In short, this one is amazing solo, amazing with a group, and comes with loads of replayability standard.

Honorable Mention - "Dominion"

Editors Choice Award

"Dominion" - I've said it before, I'll say it again, I absolutely love "Dominion" (2008). The base game which I own is ranked criminally low on BGG. I’ve played that version to death, and have had the pleasure of playing the expansion "Dominion: Intrigue" (2009) a bunch also. For my money this is the premier deck building game, and it will always have a place in my heart. The box comes with a huge variety of different card stacks, and you select just 10 stacks to form the pool from which you can build a deck each game. The game seems endlessly replayable because the power level of each card fluctuates wildly game-to-game based around the other cards included and the synergies therein. The cards' power levels also vary a lot based on the number of players making for varied experiences when playing 1-vs-1 in contrast to larger group games. This is easily my favorite game of all time and one that I have been always eager to play for several years.

Honorable Mention - "Everdell"

Just finished another game of heat and I am just constantly amazed by the cleverness of its design. One particular thing I appreciate is the way they approached the production. Heat is not the fanciest, most luxurious board game I own, but I'd argue it is one of the best value games I own. Some components like the player mats, cars, or gear shifters are not the highest quality, but it's obvious they tried to put their money in the most high impact components/areas of the game. I.e.:

  1. You get enough components to have a full 6 players (really nice they don't make you buy an expansion to go beyond 4 as I see a lot of other games do)
  2. The art is fantastic, remaining thematic while still having a unique style
  3. The actual track board is massive, making it easier to understand. Plus you get 2 double sided boards adding to variability/replayability
  4. Not only do you have 4 tracks but you also have an ai module, a custom upgrade module, a track conditions/weather module, and a semi-legacy module

All of these things add to the replayability and actual gameplay experience of the game. There is a surprising amount of game here for around ~$60.

They certainly could've gone with thicker player birds, maybe nicer cardstock, or cars models that are more detailed. But I think the key guiding principle that I see in this game is functionality. Every piece that needed to have a bit spent on it got some more money. The background remains the background. In a time where everything seemingly needs to be over the top and deluxified, it's nice to see a lean game like this still deliver a big game experience.

What are you favorite games that just lets players roll hand fulls of dice that aren’t war games? I’ve been looking to add one to my collection but just not sure what is out there.

How do you sleep at night knowing that there is a possibility that some components inside those games might be missing or defective and it might be too late to ask for replacement by the time you finally get to unseal the games???

For me, Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is flawlessly designed. It’s not even in my top 10, but it boggles my mind how everything works together so well (and also remains so balanced).

I am very surprised 401 games has often products in stock that Boardgamebliss dosen't. The prices are not even different (maybe 1-5 dollars sometimes but that's it!). Fellow Canadian board gamers, do you not know the existence of 401 games or is there a reason you prefear Boardgamebliss over the former?
