How would dimming the sun over one Island help fight climate change? How would they prevent these particles from traveling and dimming the sun in areas that don't want the sun dimmed? If we can dim the sun in a specific area why would you do it over a populated area that already has problems with Vitamin D deficiency and stereotypically is one of the least sunny population areas of the world? Why wouldn't you do it over the pacific where there isn't a population, there is more solar heating per area, and not negatively impact crop yields or health?

My own opinion is that there is a budget for political will to handle climate change and by impacting people you are exhausting political will. So why wouldn't you modify an approach in a way that would be more effective and not exhaust that political will?

Part of the problem is doing things like this over UK just feeds conspiracy theorists that say things like, "You are the carbon they are trying to eliminate." When you target population centers and arable land people immediately ask "Why are you doing this to me?" That's just where their mind immediately goes. So then why not find adjustments that give you the same or better impact without feeding conspiracy theories?

Most of the planet is not populated, so if you are doing it over a population center it starts to look a lot like targeting that population rather than the environment. Looks matter. Because next thing you know people are getting paranoid and opposing everything you want to do with climate change.

So does anyone have a good explanation for why solar dimming over the UK is a good idea?

I'm at a bit of a crossroads and discouraged at the moment with how job prospects are going. Trying to figure out what to do next.

I've worked at a call centre for the last 11 years for a government healthcare provider. I started there when I was a teenager as one of the people on the phones, but worked my way up to a monitor position within a few years where I listen to other people's calls and provide coaching. I also have duties in operational support with the team where I do timekeeping, scheduling, supervise shifts, and some data analysis. I am highly skilled with databases and Excel.

The job has been fine, but I basically reached the highest role I could have on the team many years ago. I'm also only listed as a casual employee in my job despite working full time hours. This fact was a point of investigation in the department as I was looking after many crucial tasks despite being a casual employee, but they determined my duties were still in scope for my position.

Without going into too many specifics, my manager has continuously made it clear that there wouldn't be more opportunities for me to advance at the company despite my strong performance. Main reason being that higher roles are already filled by long serving employees who have given no indication they will be leaving any time soon. So I have been looking to leave the company for a long time as I'm frustrated being a casual employee for so long.

I decided reduce my hours and go back to school in 2020 to improve my job prospects. I ended up staying in school for 4 years and completing a BBA with a major in supply chain management. During this time I also married my wife and we had a daughter in my last semester at school.

At the end of my degree, I got a job with a national railway company working as a dispatcher in their operations centre. They liked my experience working on phones and my education. This was the permanent position I was looking for with benefits and only a slight hit in pay. The role was shift work though with day and night shifts. They would schedule me on whatever shifts they needed and many days I would go home to sleep for 8 hours and head back to work another shift. The job was very stressful and they were short staffed, meaning overtime was forced frequently and you could end up working 16 hours straight.

All my colleagues there were basically giving me advice or strong hints that I should get out while I can. Being incredibly burned out and not seeing my wife or new baby for days on end, I decided to leave and go back to my original job where I could technically make more money and work more consistent hours during the day.

This was the right decision for my family and I don't regret leaving. I've been able to help my wife with raising our daughter and I have gotten to spend a lot more time with them that I would've missed out on.

My plan with going back to my old company was to work there for a few months while applying for other jobs again and move into a different role somewhere else. This was in June 2024 and it has been over a year now since I made this change, but I am still at my old job.

The first month I landed two intervews that I felt I did fine on, but didn't receive any offers. I kept applying for roles, but things seemed to dry up quickly. The last 11 months I had two other applications where I made it to multiple interviews and felt like I as a really strong applicant, but ultimately someone else was chosen. I have applied for over 100 jobs in the last 12 months now and I'm still stuck where I am. I usually apply for operations supervisor or coordinator roles. I would like to grow into a project manager role or a not for profit company job, but I'm not targeting those roles this early in my career.

I am wondering if I am doing something wrong. I apply when I can, but being a parent and working, I don't always have time everyday. I make tailored resumes and write cover letters. Sometimes I'll use AI to help write the cover letters faster, but I'll always adjust them to be more natural and better fit the posting. I apply, apply, and apply and I hear nothing most of the time. Sometimes I wonder if I was put on a blacklist since I left my railway job pretty abrubtly, but I felt like it was on fine terms, and it seems absurd that such a thing would exitst.

I'm lucky that my wife has a great job and provides us benefits, but I need a better job with better pay and benefits to provide a better life for my kids.

I'm wondering if I should pivot industries or pursue training in a different field. I wouldn't say I'm particularly career picky or feel that I am too good for certain roles. I know a lot of people define themselves by their career, but I really don't need a glamorous career. I would be open to anything at paid 60k-100k or more with benefits and had reasonable working hours and time off.

I'm wondering what industries or roles are lucrative or have opportunities that people are seeing? Is there training that would be worthwhile to aquire? I also hear about people getting reached out to by recruiters all the time, but that never happens to me despite being on Linkedin and such. I really just feel I need to reorient myself, I'm just looking for where I should be looking for opportunities.

An argument can be made that all actions people take are for their own self-interest. Even things like helping the community is done for reciprocal benefits for yourself plus the general increase in respect.

Another point is that if all people just act for their own self-interest, they will have a better life themselves, and if everyone does the same, some sort of proper balance will be achieved.

I have been having some occasional discussions with my friends over this. I personally disagree, but would love to hear what others have to say. Feel free to discuss!

I wonder what causes people who once thought they’d spend their life together to not want to do that anymore.

Has your partner changed? Or did they not change when you expected them to? Have you changed?

Have you not noticed each others’ flaws when love was young and the pink glasses still worked and only discovered them later?

And what can your experience teach us about our own relationships?

Really I'm just asking what's the best way to deal with anxiety, or if ignoring it to the point of ambivalence is unhealthy.

trigger warning: I do talk about anxiety and existential issues in my spoilers section

Tap for spoilerAfter a week of doing edibles that are way too strong for me, my brain got a little rewired and my brain got rewired (nothing extreme just noticed how I feel about specific things have changed)

But I had a "time is a flat circle" moment with a my foster/adopted cat looking like my dead cat I had for 17 years and having to realize that I'm helpless to watch everyone grow old and die. Now that I'm sobering up I'm accepting it and moving on, but I think about "what's the best way to tackle anxiety"

My partner and I are getting older, and sleep in different rooms at different times. We've both worried about the other dying unbeknownst. I wear a pulse watch, but don't know if it will do what I want. Any ideas, friends? I'd like us to be able to glance at a screen and see a heartbeat, ideally without spending more than a couple hundred dollars, and without too much hassle or cumbersome equipment. I appreciate any suggestions. (edit - we use android and Linux.)

What are the modern design trends you hate most? Feel free to rant! Mine are:

  • Physical buttons are out of fashion, now EVERYTHING must have a touch screen instead! Especially if it makes the appliance more inconvenient to use. Like having to press a flimsy touch screen ten times to scroll through a washing machine's programs instead of just turning a physical knob and pressing a physical start button.
  • Every website looks like it's made for a phone and was vomited by the same app in slightly different flavors of vomit. And then having the nerve to tell you to download the mobile app 😑
  • Why does everything need to be an app by the way? Especially when the only advantage the app gives you over the website is that you're not constantly spammed with messages telling you to use the app... Are you making your website shittier on purpose so I feel like I have to use the app?... I don't WANT your app, you can shove it where the sun doesn't shine.
  • Actually EVERYTHING looks like it's made for a phone... Like what's the deal with all those hamburger menus on DESKTOP software? Please just put a regular menu and same me some pointless clicking, it's not like you're lacking screen space. I especially hate that those menus can't be opened from the keyboard like regular menus. You know, "keyboards"? Those things that people on DESKTOPS use?
  • All phones look the same. All laptops look the same. It's boring as hell.
  • Laptops must be as thin and flimsy as possible. Bonus points if you can't even fit an ethernet port.
  • I'm so sick of rounded corners everywhere... 😭

I've been pondering this for a while, and wanted to bring it to the wider Lemmy community:

Should Lemmy consider potentially adding a feature similar to Discord’s @everyone (or maybe @all)—but strictly limited to moderators of a community?

The idea is this: If a mod needs to get the attention of all subscribers to a Lemmy community—say, for instance migrations, rule changes, major events, or time-sensitive issues—there's currently no effective way to notify everyone at once. Even if they pin a post or make a sticky, there's no guarantee everyone will see it, especially in larger or more passive communities.

A feature like @everyone could potentially solve this by triggering a notification or at least a visible alert for every subscriber, similar to how Discord handles announcements.

Potential Benefits:

Improved communication during emergencies or migrations (such as an instance shutdown).

A good way to highlight major community-wide polls, rule changes, or reorganizations.

Could help smaller communities stay engaged and informed.

Ensures announcements don’t get buried in active communities.

Potential Concerns:

Abuse or spam from overuse by mods (though this could be mitigated).

Notification fatigue if used too often, especially in large communities.

Could feel too centralized or “top-down” in a decentralized ecosystem like Lemmy.

Possible Solutions or Safeguards:

Limit the feature to 1 use every X days per community.

Require a confirmation popup or warning before sending it.

Allow users to opt out of @everyone notifications in their settings.

Only make it active in posts or announcements, not comment threads.

I’m curious—has this feature ever been proposed officially before? And more importantly, what are your thoughts?

Would a feature like this enhance moderator tools and improve communication, or would it be too easily abused and go against Lemmy’s decentralized principles?

Looking forward to hearing everyone’s take.

What is that one single video from Dunkey do you just bust a gut at every single time you watch it, no matter when you do? It's gotta be one of his videos that you find the absolute funniest, the one that you always end up laughing at, whether it be due to its absurd nature, Dunkey's silly commentary, or something else entirely that makes you lose all composure and find absolutely hysterical.

My pick? It's this one video from Dunkey, Japan World Cup. In this one video, he is showcasing a huge collection of horse derby racing animations that are part of much bigger DVD box sets (that are purchasable), where there are several different kinds of horses, animals, and etc., with the animations being silly and often involving hilarity, like a horse riding in a car, a rocket-powered horse, a Trojan horse breaking, and other hilarious types of situations. The animations alone are funny and silly enough on their own, but Dunkey's funny and outright hilarious commentary on the animations passing them off as real derby races and freaking out over different scenarios, the funny and humorous sound effects edited in, and everything else just makes this an absolutely hilarious and funny video.

For example, my runner-up is Ice-T: A notorious gangster rapper and "Cop Killer" singer currently in his 25th year in the role of CSI detective for the NYPD.
My top spot goes to Snoop Dogg: notorious gangster rapper and marijuana enthusiast who is now besties with Martha Stewart and in demand for cameo voice-overs in children's programming.

Of course, if schadenfreude is your thing, there's legendary comedian-cum-rapist monster Bill Cosby, or the recent falls of any number of the now mask-off nazis permeating the media.....

So, what is your favorite real-person character arc?

Just looking for basic glassware, bunsen, distillation, and stir plate for working with simple stuff related to circuit board etching, tinning, through hole plating, and some reverse engineering stuff like dissolving epoxy chip packaging for die shots. I'd like to be able to shape some glass. Above all, I'm looking for cheap stuff that is barely adequate in the few hundred dollars class total. Like I have no issues hacking a thrift store hotplate with a rare earth magnet on a small motor. Are there any cheap options to stay safe and functional?
