'Silverfish scales' by Ulrich Vogl

Lepisma saccharina

The scales of silverfish are a good test for the resulotion of any optics, and a true challange for any stacking algorithm.

Illumination: Back light and oblique

'Punchcard Architecture' by Pneumococcus

I quite like the random pattern of the windows on the left, but do wonder whether they let in enough daylight. It seems to me the architect pays more attention to design rather than functionality. I should know, I happen to work in a building designed by the same chap ...

'The Wing (Hemerobius humulinus)' by Ulrich Vogl

Hemerobius humulinus, wing detail

Also the wings of Hemerobiidae are nicely structured. Here some UV fluorescence lets the veins glow.

Does anyone else feel strangely calm when seeing this photograph?

My brain goes all mushy and mellow when it notices that I'm apparently in proximity of a slower kind of a fellow. 🐢

'Aphid wing' by Ulrich Vogl

Green aphid (wing) (Aphidoidea sp.)

Mitutoyo 50x NA 0.55, tube lens ITL200 (Nikon)

The wings of aphids are rather thin (about 500nm), and also very rough (+-160nm). Thats why they show up with rather small regions of the same color (in epi-illumination at high magnification).

A720 supermacro -- pencil ferrule + eraser by jim

This is full-frame. Flattened pencil eraser and ferrule that spent some time in the street. Inspired by cuazanet, I wanted to see what kind of reversed-lens super-macro results I could get with my Canon A720IS. Here are some tests, handheld under a single, bright table lamp.

I used manual exposure and focus. The reversed lens was an old 85mm f/1.7 from my 35mm film camera.

I think it worked well.
