Many shows come to Broadway, having originated in London. One show taking London by storm is the critically acclaimed, Off West End sensation, RIOT ACT. Written and performed by Alexis Gregory, RIOT ACT is formed word-for-word from interviews with three key players in the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement: Michael-Anthony Nozzi, a survivor of the Stonewall riots; Lavinia Co-op, an alternative ’70s drag artist; and Paul Burston, a ’90s Aids Activist. Gregory’s verbatim solo powerhouse is a breath-taking, hard-hitting, yet hilarious wild white-knuckle ride through six decades of queer history.

Not a feel good story, so beware. But I think there's a glimmer of hope here in contextualizing despair into survival, as upsetting as that may be.

A federal judge has struck down Arkansas’ ban on gender-affirming care for minors. U.S. District Judge Jay Moody ruled Tuesday that the nation’s first ban on such care for children violates the U.S. Constitution. Moody in 2021 had temporarily blocked the state from enforcing its ban while he considered the challenge to the measure. The law prohibited doctors from providing gender-affirming hormone treatment, puberty blockers or surgery to anyone under 18. It also prohibited doctors from referring patients elsewhere from such care. The ban had been widely criticized by medical groups.

The case had been closely watched as an important test of whether bans on transition care for minors, enacted by more than a dozen states, could withstand challenges.

Which one do you prefer, LGBTQIA+ or GSRM?

LGBTQIA+
+Recognisable
+???
-Cumbersome
-Some groups are relegated to the "+"

GSRM
+Includes everyone
+Not cumbersome
-New
-Not familiar

OK I am biased but I do want to know why people still use the long one when we could be using the short one?

Great interview today of two queer pioneers on PBS!

https://lauraflanders.org/2023/06/kinship-ties-holly-hughes-esther-newton/?mode=1

The Laura Flanders show is generally a good place for progressive stories, but this one in particular was about a lesbian couple, one of whom was a pioneering performer, and the other an anthropologist who studied the queer community as an anthropologist would-- which was revolutionary for the time, as queer people weren't even considered a culture then. A good episode!

Putin instructed the Russian health ministry to create a separate psychiatric institute for the study of LGBT people, as well as a number of other "behavioral areas, including social behavior."

This was stated by the Russian health minister Mikhail Murashko in response to the question of the Russian MP, journalist/freak Anatoly Wasserman during the first reading in the State Duma of the draft law on prohibiting transgender transition. Such an institute will be created on the basis of Serbsky State Research Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry.

Wasserman asked if the Ministry of Health is working on research on "psychological and, if necessary, psychiatric methods” of bringing gender roles of LGBT people "in line with reality."

This may mean that research work is underway in Russia to introduce conversion therapy – a set of psychological and physical practices that are aimed at "correcting" a person's sexual orientation and gender identity.

A Detroit-area community has banned LGBTQ+ flags from publicly owned flagpoles. The unanimous vote by the Hamtramck City Council came during a tense meeting that raised questions about discrimination, religion and the city’s reputation for welcoming newcomers. The council voted to display only certain flags, including the American flag and one that represents the native countries of immigrant residents. More than 40% of Hamtramck's residents were born in other countries, especially Yemen and Bangladesh. Some members of the all-Muslim council said the pride flag clashes with the beliefs of some members of their faith. Residents and businesses are free to fly pride flags.
