I’m guessing you’re in the US. In many parts of the world including where I live, it’s the messenger app. If you don’t have WhatsApp you’re pretty much not communicating with most people.

I wonder how many open source libraries their driver codebase relies on, it had best be zero with that attitude.

This would only work if they made the connection between their shitty behaviour and their mortgage application being rejected years later, which they won’t. They won’t even know who rejected it.

“Windows 95 chime composter” is a fucking wild way to refer to Brian Eno.

You just know he thought this sounded so fucking cool in his heads before he typed it out.

It’s basically a seedbox, people have been using those for piracy for years. It’s a convenient way to have access to an Internet connection that has several times more throughput than your home connection. You can configure Stremio to just grab torrents directly if you don’t want to use a debrid service.

There are definitely gatekeepers. Even if your hosting provider isn’t blocking port 25 by default, SPF, DKIM and DMARC will see your emails going straight into the recipient’s junk folder/spam filter if not correctly configured. Hosting your own mail server at home is also a fantastic way to piss off your ISP, lose emails to downtime, have your IP blacklisted from many services and open up your environment to exploitation. It can be done but let’s not pretend that it’s easy or that there aren’t barriers to entry.

Mail servers are like filo pastry. Sure, you could go to the inconvenience and effort of making it yourself and I’m sure it’ll be very satisfying to do so. But 99% of professionals use the store bought version, and for good reason, because it’s a lot of effort for an end result that is no better and in all likelihood probably worse.

600k people being jailed? Very unlikely, the UK doesn’t even have 200k serving police officers in total and prisoners have been released early because there’s simply no space left for them. I’d be surprised if even 1% were arrested. The UK brought in some super draconian protest laws recently though, so no doubt there will be some, especially given what the protest is for.

I would argue that being able to rent a house is necessary. That doesn’t mean we have to rent them from private landlords.

A new community-led initiative called “EU OS” to develop a Linux distribution initiative looks like a positive development. It is specifically created to address the unique requirements of the European Union's (EU) public sector organizations. For me, this initiative stands out for its commitment to the EU's digital sovereignty, reducing reliance on external vendors, and creating a secure, independent digital ecosystem.
