Still can’t believe I signed up for this instance solely because of the cool name. I don’t deserve this wonderful community 😢.

I appreciate the transparency and frankly couldn't ask for more. Shit happens and this is a one-person operation. Thanks for all your effort!

By this logic we should remove Clarence Thomas from his seat by executive order and call his tenure deijustice.

Thanks! I'll stick to the RAID 1 option then. I was looking at S3 Glacier for backup when it comes to that. But I really don't want to worry about it too much until I've really got something going that I plan to use longer term.

I see the appeal with unRAID! My drives are pretty straight forward though I pretty much only plan to use the 2 4TB drives. Will probably skip the RAID for now (it's not going to store anything SUPER important) and just use it as a hobby test server.

Ollama of course! Looks like the 1080s should be able to handle most 7B models. Exciting! Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Ooh this is a nice list of apps! I like doing things the hard way so I'll probably skip the Freedombox part but these app ideas have got me thinking....

Yeah an online instance would be a good place to start. Maybe a GoToSocial instance.

Pretty sure it has 2 HDD bays, so I was thinking I would do something similar to the Synology Hybrid RAID on a 4TB drive. On retrospect though this might be way too crippling of a move for a play server, so I might forgo the RAID idea.

The Linux Upskill Challenge looks perfect! I feel comfortable with about 40% of the table of contents. Should be a fun weekend of experimenting.

Thanks for the help!

I have an old Alienware r8 and several 2-4 TB HDDs gathering dust in a closet. The Alienware actually runs remarkably quiet and it occurred to me I could turn it into a DIY NAS.

I’m not entirely sure where to start though. Some immediate questions:

  • What’s a good NAS OS to install?
  • Any fun things I can do besides plex transcoding with a 1080 GPU?
  • Would it make sense to run a Pixelfed/Mastodon server off this guy?
  • Can I run a RAID on it without buying a separate HDD bay?

Background:

I already have a Synology NAS running Plex. It transcodes 1080p fine which is really all I need it for.

Other than a Plex port forward, I have zero experience putting services out on the public web (but would like to learn!).

Thanks for sharing this thought. I had the same feelings and was disappointed to see that many of us are falling into the same headline clickbait trap that we accuse the other side of. Thankfully, you're getting plenty of upvotes.

Yes, the word transgenic was used in the description of the one of the funded studies. However that same cited study is intentionally attempting to study the effects of androgen treatment on reproductive health for the benefit of transgender individuals.

I do not condone this ridiculous writing from an official Whitehouse press release. I also fully approve of every single study listed. But the "haha they're dumb" rhetoric is not helpful. What's helpful is encouraging people to demand sources, think critically, and hold authority figures accountable when they lie.

Yeah I use the bridge.

Would’ve switched in a heartbeat with IMAP support but that’s not in the cards. Stuck with Proton for now.

Haha this is a scene in inside out 2

Started up season 2 of Avatar The Last Airbender and it occurred to me that I never skip the intro sequences for any episode of this show. It’s just so good.

What other show intros can you not skip?

I thought it was the cologne they spray at the store, but even clothes I have delivered from a distribution center also have a smell that is very discernibly NOT Tide detergent.

How?? What are they washing these clothes with to make them smell like that??

  1. Post a wish, like for a genie (e.g. "I wish for a million dollars")
  2. People comment with ways it can backfire. (e.g. "Great! Here's 2700 Zimbabwean dollars.")
  3. Profit!

I understand that weather on TV can’t be hyperlocally accurate. But a weather app on my phone has my exact GPS coordinates. Why can’t it tell me exactly when a rain cloud will be passing over my location?

It’s gotten to the point where I just use precipitation maps to figure out my rain chances for the day.

The hourly forecast is mostly useless because it’s not a chance % but a % of the area that will be raining.

I've noticed that most commercially available glass screen protectors are too reflective, or too noticeable. It really takes away from the gorgeous Apple display.

Has anyone used a brand that mirrors the quality of finish that comes on the iPhone displays?

Just learned that a friend of mine always tips 10% on takeout. Ive never tipped on takeout unless they offered me a water/soda while I waited or something.

US biased, but I’m a little curious about other countries as well.

… is an extremely lackluster feat. I had originally read the skill description as being a main OR bonus attack and that felt really strong. After getting the feat I am now stuck with a meaningless skill that takes both actions for what is essentially just a walk + hit.

Am I missing something with this feat?

No way to reset or go back other than by resetting the app. Screen is completely blank and white. Only the system menu bar on the very top is visible (clock, cell signal, wifi signal, and battery).

House Bill 2127, which takes effect on Sept. 1, will do away with local rules that require water breaks for construction workers. The cities of Austin and Dallas, for example, require 10-minute breaks every four hours. San Antonio officials had been considering a similar ordinance.

“We are human beings who need respect,” Martínez said. “We really need to be allowed to work without problems, without any barriers … Believe me, we are dying inside those buildings when they take away our water and our [break] time.”
