Is it typical when trying to join a community on a different instance that it says pending? Or am I needing to wait for someone to approve me joining?

Same here, a bunch of communities I joined have "Subscribe Pending", https://imgur.com/Fu6Xoom. Everything still works though, I can see the posts and interact with them.
