one of the many reasons I prefer using DeX (Android Desktop) is because it seems to do a better job of managing system memory to allocate to active apps / processes / tabs... it makes my work easier

If I am using Linux / Window / Mac then I need to be aware of what apps I have open / running and how much memory they are using, or things can lag and slow down after a while of extensive app switching and workflows

when I'm using DeX I don't ever think about that... I just open and run whatever apps I need at the time, jump from one app to another seamlessly, and android seems to manage background processes and suspends them automatically when needed...

Daily I am using

  • many many tabs in chrome + brave + samsung internet, for web apps like Salesforce, Azure AD, JIRA, Trello, etc, and general searching & browsing
  • keep + obsidian + quickedit
  • proton & google email + calendar + drive + tasks + appsscript
  • multiple file manager windows
  • youtube
  • gallery & snapseed
  • collabora office apps / gsuite web drive apps
  • Meet, Slack, Whatsapp
  • other stuff

I never "close" anything, I just swtich between apps to whatever I need to do, sometimes an app or web-tab reloads (quickly), but the device and workflow almost never slows down

When before I just used linux or windows laptops they would grind to a halt after a while, and fry my brain opening and closing stuff to manage system resources throughout the day to get everything done... of course more memory and faster processors mean they can "do more", but meh, kinda not... and it's just something I don't even need to think about when using DeX

I was a Hardcore User with DEX. Loved it and still do ! But since Google has also a USBC to HDMi Output on their Smartphones, Motorola too and Samsung of course. I think this Android Desktop Feature will become standard. Google seems to have a big Plan with Android, since they invest in Android Notebooks instead of Chromebooks and since they are also investing into XR. This could be the starting point to something really big! A whole new ecosystem based on Android instead of Windows / Mac or Linux. In my Imagination there are Smartphones wich are also computers. Working via USBC ->HDMi and Tablets with Keyboard. Similar to Samsung Tab S Tablets. XR Goggles were you have something like DEX as a big virtual Screen. There you can even Play XBox Games via XCloud. Working in GDocs, Gmail and so on. Google has a lot of opportunities to win the race! And DEX was a glimpse of all that, what is coming in the near future. 2-3 years. What is your opinion to that topic?

UPERFECT 1800p120

The monitor has finally shown up (it got caught in the Canadapost strike, wuwu)

ngl, this is easily the best panel they've shipped for us to review.

They also sent along a basic VESA monitor stand, to convert the portable monitor into a proper desktop screen.

I've got a couple weeks off now, so I'm hoping to really put it thru it's paces, and get a review out soonish

If you've got any questions you'd like dealt with, fire em into this thread

Sup ya'll. I'm apitballing random questions here. I know it's possible, I just don't know exactly HOW it is possible. The Linux on Android idea stumps me, even though I've watched video after video and read tons of articles, I'm still kind of floundering around. Anyone her use Linux on Android on DEX? If so, how so? Anyone willing to teach? Thanks everyone

Edit: thanks to everyone for the advice and resources!

will Dex every get a web full browser, instead of a mobile one? I really wish Dex had a full chrome windows type Browers, with bookmark bar and tabs side by side, like windows i would buy a Samsung tablet in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I can't decide between a s10 ultra or a surface pro. A full browser has so many benefit, but so does android.

Source article here: Goodbye DeX, Samsung reveals the fate of the Windows app

Additional source: Just use Dex for Windows and update it to the latest version. It'll tell you during the update.

Aw man, I'm sad! I use the PC version of Dex daily on my work computer setup, which will be a devastating loss.

Samsung suggests using the Phone Link (or Link to Windows, as they cite) to connect to your phone and its features on Windows. But there are a few problems with this.

  • Phone Link is wireless-only except in rare cases. No native USB support. The best wireless is still slower than USB-C and there is visible lag in any app you open on the PC.
  • Apps opened via Link don't support orientation changing. If your phone is in portrait mode, so is every app. Watching YT in tall mode? Requires a hack or shenanigans to get landscape to work.
  • The messaging apps don't respect any anti-spam features your phone version might have. You see everything, even if it's already been filtered on your phone.
  • Requires a Microsoft account. So if you are like me and are restricted to a work account on your work computer, but are allowed to use Dex for PC in both a work and personal manner, you will have to either register your personal MS account on your work computer or your work MS account on your phone. Neither are great ideas.
  • There's no native audio selection. Dex for Windows can be set, inside Dex, to any output you want such as your Bluetooth headset. But Phone Link uses whatever Windows is set to, so you have to change your entire sound output to your headset if you want to use it that way.

And probably a lot more. I tried to submit some feedback to Samsung about this, but they said, and I quote, "Thank you for your interest in sharing your idea with Samsung. However, our long-standing company policy does not allow us to accept or consider suggestions for new products or product improvements other than those we have specifically requested."

If anyone has an in with Samsung, please tell them this is a bad idea! Phone Link is not a good substitute!

I'm not sure I've ever come across a more determined group to astroturf a terrible product before

it's almost always accounts that are 1 day old, and they immediately have 5 or 6 folks cheering them on, also from 1 day old accounts.

they're going to offer free units to beta testers, or similar, I would assume this is 100% a scam on top of the shit product

please stay away, and report the posts as soon as you see them
