I recently came across some exciting news about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 series featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processors. These processors, built on ARM architecture, aim to deliver not only exceptional performance for mobile devices but also PC-level computing capabilities. This is incredibly exciting because mobile devices are becoming more than just phones—they’re evolving into portable computers.

Additionally, there are reports that Android 15 will provide enhanced support for Linux terminals and Linux applications. The integration of Linux apps and terminal capabilities into the Android ecosystem could significantly boost productivity on mobile devices.

When I connect these two developments, one thing immediately comes to mind: Samsung's "Linux on DeX" project. If you remember, this feature allowed users to connect their device to an external monitor and access a fully functional Linux desktop environment. Unfortunately, Samsung discontinued this project in 2019, ceasing support after Android 10.

Given the hardware power of the Galaxy S25, the software potential of Android 15, and the increasing demands from users, I believe Samsung should seriously consider bringing back Linux on DeX or something similar.

It would be an incredible tool for developers and system administrators.

It offers a great solution for users seeking a portable desktop experience with their mobile devices.

Here’s my suggestion to Samsung: If you’re developing a powerhouse like the Galaxy S25 series, you should also provide features that allow users to fully utilize that power. A return of Linux on DeX, or a comparable Linux desktop experience, could transform these devices into not just smartphones but full-fledged workstations. With Android 15’s Linux support in the pipeline, the time is right—both the hardware and software are ready.

What do you think? Should Samsung bring back Linux on DeX? And if so, should we collectively voice our demands to make this happen?

I got UI 7'd this morning, and I'm looking for a Dex-for-PC replacement with the following requirements:

  1. The ability to use the same mouse/keyboard I use to operate my PC
  • My work does not allow me to remote into my laptop, even at home

  • I do not want my laptop sitting on/around my desk

  • My work does allow MS tools on my phone, which is why Dex for PC was so perfect (why I bought the phone)

  1. The ability to check in on my Teams/Outlook messages, do replies, view calls (including video) over teams
  • My work does not allow the Office365 (browser) version of apps either

Basically, I DO NOT WANT to have a separate monitor/keyboard/mouse to operate the phone or other work-based interface. I want to use my home PC to periodically check in on work messages or take calls, etc., while I spend most of my time doing development on my personal PC. Also, I work from a minimal desk that is an "Island" in the middle of my home office. It looks nice, and having a bunch of devices sitting around on the desk messes that up. I went to great lengths to hide all the cables for everything.

Microsoft Edge on DeX One Ui 7 - Galaxy S21 FE (Exynos, 8/128)

I Use my primary phone (S21 FE) as DeX daily, when i'm home and not gaming. And with the OneUI 7 Updates, finally the tab bar is integrated to the title bar, make it resembles the "Real" Microsoft Edge on Desktop. and what's best? the Extensions! i'm not using many extensions, but some of the extensions i like are there so.. it feels more like real PC right now.

I'm a long-time Samsung power user and a huge fan of DeX (and the bluetooth s-pen functionality that I use as an actor for self-tapes and portraits). Or at least, I was (a fan).

After removing the bluetooth functionality of the s-pen with the S25 Ultra, now, with the update to One UI 7, Samsung has removed one of the most critical features from DeX: the ability to force apps to run in their native resolution (previously under DeX Labs). This was the only way many non-optimized apps could still be usable in a desktop-like environment.

I recently purchased Audio Evolution Mobile, a professional DAW, specifically to use it in DeX mode with my Galaxy S24 Ultra. But thanks to Samsung's changes, the app is now completely unusable. The UI scales horribly on large screens, fonts are broken, and there's no system-level override anymore. The developer admitted the issue but offered no fix—and I can’t blame them when Samsung removed the only tool that helped users work around this kind of thing.

I wrote the dev team and they don't care or seem motivated to adjust. And Samsung one would think, wants the business. So WHY, do they not have a simple way to force native app resolution in the windows within DEX for developers that don't overhaul their own apps? As an example, this one forces me to only MIRROR the original app and frankly, that is not optimal (and sucks overall on large displays regardless).

We were promised a mobile-desktop hybrid. Instead, Samsung gutted the only feature that allowed DeX to be even remotely pro-level.

If Google is working on its own desktop interface, and if Apple continues closing the workflow loop, then why is Samsung falling behind?

Bring back resolution control in DeX. Don’t let DeX die because of internal neglect.

Anyone else frustrated by this?

As always, not journalists, but we do our best to be fair/accurate. The product is supplied for free, but the company has no input on the review, and sees it at the same time as the rest of the subreddit

Protoarc XK01-TP

ProtoArc has sent their XK01-TP for review.

Like their previous keyboards we've reviewed, it's a trifold keyboard, but instead of a full size numpad, this version has decent sized trackpad.

It's a full size 88-key QWERTY keyboard, with scissor switch keys. The travel of each key is fairly shallow, but even and satisfying.

The keyboard comes with a nice little magnetic closure pouch for travel

travel pouch

A nice little addition is a little slip on the back, that contains the folding phone/tablet stand

Previous versions of the keyboards also included this little stand, but it just kind of rattled around in the case. The little pocket for it is a nice touch.

The keyboard fits nicely into the travel pouch

XK01-TP

When the keyboard is fully open, it's very solid, if a bit flat. This can be solved by simply adding some rubber feet to the top row (on the back).

comparison with the caseup version of the XK01, the trackpad replaces numpad

Comparing it to the previous kits, you can see it's the same keyboard, just swapping the trackpad for the numpad. Both keyboards work great, and it's nice to have the choice of carrying a mouse, or if you're a spreadsheet guy, the numpad is pretty great

As in previous versions, keyboard supports 3 device pairing, and swapping between is as simple as pressing the designated button for the mapping you've set up.

The keyboard has a 300mAh battery, that's rechargable via USB-C. They keyboard is unfortunately NOT backlit, altho I do see they've started to add a backlit XK01 variant

One of the nice features of course is a proper Fn lock, meaning you can choose between Media keys, and regular F1-F12 keys

Media Keys and shortcuts

The trackpad, since it's OS agnostic, has FW level shortcuts. This unfortunately means that the default DeX shortcuts aren't going to work

basic short cuts

Overall, like all of their folding keyboards, this a great option for the tech backpack, and alleviates the need to also take a mouse along. It's a fantastic accessory for the DeX user, as well as the Steam Deck (or any other hand held peripheral)

The XK01-TP is currently $85 canuckbucks at time of review
