Samsung recently released a new Dex interface with it's OneUI 6, but this new Dex is only the floating windows we already had on previous versions with a HUGE title bar in each window, and some app icons on the lower bar. Here why i think this new interface is garbage:

  • Less work space, most important of all, Dex is supposed to be a keyboard and mouse interface where things on the screen are more dense and the user has a larger space on the screen to work. Somehow new Dex has LESS WORK SPACE than tablet mode:

Comparison between interfaces

  • No multi-monitor, old Dex allows the user to use a external display and the device display simultaneously, Dex on the external display and the normal tablet/phone interface on the device. New Dex SIMPLY DOESN'T!
  • No configurability, on old Dex the user could adjust the size of the elements on the screen and the text size, new Dex HAS NO CONFIGURATION.
  • No custom launchers, new Dex uses the OneUI Launcher home screen on the desktop, so the user is simply unable to open Dex if they use other launcher.

And the list goes on on small things like the hieroglyphs they invented to the minimize and half screen icons, instead of interfaces users are already accustomed.

And ok, i can still use the old Dex (with a not so easy to find setting), but for how long? Can i trust a company that imposes on us such a half baked interface to bring it to the level of the old one before it drops support to the old?

SAMSUNG NEEDS TO BE PRESSURED ON THIS!

So having talked to a few industry folks, it sounds like we might actually be making some headway in DeX items we would like to see happen moving forwards

I can confirm that these things are at least being talked about, are on a potential road map, but no guarantees, and potentially no set time frame

I suspect most of these will not see the light of day until oneui7, but there is potential for oneui6.1.1

lean towards oneui7 tho

high resolution and portrait mode

this one comes across as the most likely of the items I've seen. should be just a whitelist type adaptation. making it easier to get 4k resolution. portrait mode they've already started fiddling with on the tablets, so I could see it expanded to "old" dex for all devices. time will tell, but I could see this happening.

additional expansion of DeX devices

this one is good news as well, perhaps the A series will get DeX in the future.

this will NOT be a retroactive change, the caveat is that the future DeX device will require USB3, and DP alt mode out.

but it does mean we will hopefully see future midrange phones get DeX

Dual Displays, ability to move windows between displays, and ability to set display location

this is the big one. this is also the most likely to slip further out in development.

it seems that they've gotten the message that dual displays is really wanted. No mention of anything more than 2.

they've fiddled with (I think) being able to move windows between tablet and external dex monitor, but I don't think on the phones (this is me guessing here, reading between lines)

if dual external displays happens, obviously be able to move between those 2, for both

so. what I suspect is that oneui7 will launch on usb4 for flagships, and midrange will get usb3.2

flagships will get ability for dual displays, and midrange will now get single external display.

4k, portrait mode will come to all.

again, nothing concrete, but know for a fact that they're at least discussing it internally.

hopefully we can start comparing our dual screen setups in pics this fall ;)

Just wondering if anybody here uses their DeX device (phone or tablet) as their 'main device' as such. Most of us have mandatory work PCs. But in terms of your own personal use: document making, web browsing, email, social media, banking, gaming - do any of. you do it all or 95% with DeX?

Hi people, I just decided to order a fully loaded 1TB green S24U after 15 years of being an Apple guy through and through. The reason being, I now need to study with work which I've used my Mac for (which itself isn't ideal for programming non Apple languages). I'm doing a bit of math for that and using my partners iPad and pencil was great. For the last week I contemplated justifying a few hundred £ just to take notes but other than that there is so much overlap between phone / laptop / tablet. Apple will never bring the pencil to the phone because then I'd not need to buy their iPad or pencil. They'll never bring a desktop mode to iPad because then I'd not need to buy a Mac.

I discovered DeX and thought that for personal use, that'd be enough of a computer for me. Then the pen, enough for doing math equations one by one in class. All in one place. If it's on one device, I don't need to pay for subscription for cloud storage or wait for it to sync (time and internet connection). It's all just there.

I tried this once in the past with a N20Ultra 5G in 2020 but here in the UK they used Exynos which means heavy workloads like gaming / music and YouTube via DeX caused it to overheat. The battery was also quite poor. I read at the time US users with the Snapdragon chip had no such issues with reasonable battery and no such overheating. Now I had one of the Samsung people confirm the S24U has the Snapdragon chip and that's all I needed to hear.

I'm really excited. Though not for the huge data migration to come - any tips or similar stories from you guys? And wisdom you can share?

I just sold my Inspiron 5402 and bought a Tab S9+. I came to the conclusion a couple weeks ago that anything I need to do with a notebook I can also do with a rather powerful tablet, so I'm willing to give Dex a try again. My workflow is quite light so I probably won't face any hard walls. The only thing I'm currently struggling with is setting up the VPN for accessing corporate systems remotely but it seems there is an easy path already. LumaFusion is quite decent, OneDrive sucks mostly but the web versions are good enough. Let's see where this goes.

I've been living under a rock. Today I learned, that I could install the Dex app on my PC to run Dex, thus no need for a special cable, extra keyboard, extra mouse/track pad or extra monitor. Simply use Dex with just a PC and a Mobile.

My point is, you don't have to spend any money to try Dex. Most peeps already have a USB cable and a PC. I didn't want to invest in more devices to connect Dex, if I wasn't going to actually use Dex in the long run.

Today I accidentally stumbled across a YT video that happened to mention installing the Dex app from the Samsung website to use Dex on a PC. I was mindblown. Samsung needs to market Dex better, if they want more people to use it or at least try it.

The DeX club has been created by Samsung Electronics France and gather IT directors from big french companies to discuss the mobile-only topics. It is a time where companies present their progress and use cases and partners present their accessories. It is also a great time to give feedback on DeX and discover the roadmap.

Please tell me if you have any message and I will share it.
