The title says it all. I've got a PC at home + Surface Pro as my laptop/tablet. However, I've recently discovered that everything I do every day on SP (browsing the web, watching videos, writing emails, taking notes) can be done on tablet, such as Galaxy Tab S8+. Do you think it can work out? I have a Samsung Phone, Watch and Buds. They will connect together flawlessly. One thing that bothers me is that price tag (around 700 USD). I've never spent so much on a tablet. Can that price be justified?

During the last 3 months I've seen at least 8 posts (including my own) asking why their phone/tablet can't output at 4K 60fps despite their dongle/adapter claiming to be able to do so. Such post would roughly explain how to search for compatible adapters as well as include a few working examples.

Setting different resolutions in GoodLock is easy enough, so let's get to the hardware side of things:

USB-C has 4 pairs of SS wires. If you're using a dongle with HDMI/DP port then it goes into Alt mode. In Alt mode, either 2 or 4 of the aforementioned SS pairs are dedicated to transmitting image using DP protocol, while the other 2 (or 0) are used for regular USB protocol. If your dongle has USB 3.0 ports then it HAS to reserve at least 2 SS lanes for it, leaving only 2 for DP Alt mode.

Example: Samsung Tab S7+ has a USB 3.2 gen 1 port. Each 4 of its SS lanes can either function as a USB 3.2 gen 1 lane (5 Gbit/s) or as a DP 1.2 lane (5.4 Gbit/s).

  • If you connect it to a fully-featured dongle with HDMI, USB 3.0, LAN, card reader, the works - it will use 2 SS lanes as USB and 2 SS lanes as DP (converted on the fly to HDMI). The resulting HDMI port receives a mere 10.8 Gbit/s - not enough for 4K 60fps.
  • If, hovewer, you use a USB-C to HDMI cable then it can go full Alt mode with all 4 SS lanes, giving you a total of 21.6 Gbit/s - enough for 4K 60fps.
  • Some noteworthy dongles (e.g. Aliexpress 1005005165068617) can achieve both 4-lane Alt mode AND USB 2.0 connection by using legacy D+ and D- pins for the USB port, leaving all 4 SS lanes for DP Alt mode.

Abbreviations: SS - SuperSpeed, DP - DisplayPort

Hello everyone,

Last week I have started a live stream / podcast about Samsung DeX and Mobile-Only solutions in general. My first guest was Danijel Stanic from Samsung Electronics. I thought it would be a great idea to share with you how it was made technically so here we go:

Writing the article

The big challenge was to follow the promise and do the podcast in mobile-only.

Here is the stuff I used:

-Samsung Galaxy Fold 5 with DeX as main device

-Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 as Packshot camera

-Samsung Galaxy S8 as Camera 3

-Blue Yeti USB Microphone which works now natively on Android

-2 light rings

-MiraDock as station to connect the monitor, microphone, mouse and keyboard to the phone

-Sony Headset connected to the microphone to have voice feedback

Then I use a software in SaaS called StreamYard to synchronize different livestream (Linkedin, Twitter, Youtube) and record them into one file. They have no Android app so I use StreamYard on the Samsung internet web browser which is great. It took me a few hours to play with the software and my setup to acknowledge all the possibilities and it is quiet simple.

The setup

The only problem that I encountered was to share my screen. The web browser was not supported because it is not Chromium based so I had to connect to my Windows gaming PC via Parsec, be connected to the stream and share its screen to show the news articles we were reviewing with my guest. The issue was that while doing so, the camera/microphone was interrupted. So I had to alt-tab quickly to go back to it. Not very practicle for me and the audience.

Overall, the challenge is passed. The experience was easy and smooth and I am very happy with the result.

Firefox Nightly now has an optional experimental tab bar that makes the UI more similar to Firefox on a computer. To enable it you need to:

  1. use a current Firefox Nightly
  2. go to Settings > About Firefox Nightly
  3. tap/click the Firefox logo five times to enable the Secret Settings menu
  4. go to Settings > Secret Settings
  5. activate Enable Tab Strip

I had to restart my browser for good measure, but it works. Functionality is basic at the moment - you can open and close tabs, but not reorder them, mute individually etc like on a computer. But I think it is a good step in the right direction.
