Hey folks. I've seen lots of related posts but haven't found specifically the info I'm looking for. Hoping to get some insight here from users of Dex on a monitor as a desktop replacement to a laptop or desktop PC, coming from Windows.

I've more or less made up my mind on doing this - I primarily use my Surface Pro 8 for work, using Google office options. I browse news, watch Netflix - all things I can do on my S9 FE. My laptop, although a luxury, is now overkill for my needs. I'm comfortable with the Dex system enough to understand the changes.

I found out that S9 FE+ does not do monitor-out. So, after selling my S23 Ultra I am picking up an S24FE or standard S24 and keeping my tablet. The Ultra itself is great and I love the screen real estate, but I pay too much and it's under utilized.

With this background info I am conveying my ideals - "top of the line feel" with screen real estate to work efficiently.

My primary remaining questions:

I plan to connect via HDMI vs wireless - does anyone use a monitor that is simply FHD? I love higher resolution and fitting as much onto a screen as possiblem. My suspicion is that a QHD with a monitor around the 27" size, wide, would be a better option for crisper images and ability to multitask. The BF sales are epic for FHD monitors but I don't think I'll be happy.

Second: is syncing Dex between my new S24 and S9 FE+ possible? Or is that as simple as ensuring that in general things are synced between both devices with databases android (I'm looking for a seamless experience, from tablet in my truck at work during the day to phone connected to the monitor on a desk at night), with minimal manual work (obviously mostly things are online but I'm thinking of settings, notifications, etc).

Third: would it be worth also upgrading my tablet or will the phone handle the load?

Fourth! Final - any accessory recommendations? Such as docking stations (I'd prefer to "mount" my device upright and charge vs just sitting flat on the desk and connected to a chord. Wireless keyboards, mouse, etc?

Thank you all so much. All other insights welcome!

I recently came across some exciting news about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 series featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processors. These processors, built on ARM architecture, aim to deliver not only exceptional performance for mobile devices but also PC-level computing capabilities. This is incredibly exciting because mobile devices are becoming more than just phones—they’re evolving into portable computers.

Additionally, there are reports that Android 15 will provide enhanced support for Linux terminals and Linux applications. The integration of Linux apps and terminal capabilities into the Android ecosystem could significantly boost productivity on mobile devices.

When I connect these two developments, one thing immediately comes to mind: Samsung's "Linux on DeX" project. If you remember, this feature allowed users to connect their device to an external monitor and access a fully functional Linux desktop environment. Unfortunately, Samsung discontinued this project in 2019, ceasing support after Android 10.

Given the hardware power of the Galaxy S25, the software potential of Android 15, and the increasing demands from users, I believe Samsung should seriously consider bringing back Linux on DeX or something similar.

It would be an incredible tool for developers and system administrators.

It offers a great solution for users seeking a portable desktop experience with their mobile devices.

Here’s my suggestion to Samsung: If you’re developing a powerhouse like the Galaxy S25 series, you should also provide features that allow users to fully utilize that power. A return of Linux on DeX, or a comparable Linux desktop experience, could transform these devices into not just smartphones but full-fledged workstations. With Android 15’s Linux support in the pipeline, the time is right—both the hardware and software are ready.

What do you think? Should Samsung bring back Linux on DeX? And if so, should we collectively voice our demands to make this happen?
