Happy July 1st! Starting today, free third-party Reddit apps will no longer be usable, but as much as we don't want to admit it, some of us still miss the content on Reddit, and it can be hard to resist the "just browse Old Reddit with an adblocker" loophole. Before we get into yet another "crossposting bots on the Fediverse" debate, here's a quick summary of what this bot is and is not intended to do:

Leddit is a fork of lemmit.online and does not use the Reddit API at all. Unlike lemmit.online which is a public service, Leddit is meant to be self-hosted on a personal instance as syncing comments is a very slow process that will get rate-limited on a normal instance.

Based on my demo instance that syncs posts and comments from two subreddits with a combined subscriber count of about 1 million, this takes about the same amount of time that lemmit.online takes to sync only posts from more than 100 subreddits.

An example of a thread that is automatically created and updated by Leddit can be seen here. The header message and position can be customized. Leddit preserves the comment thread's structure and identifies the OP in the comments.

For shorter threads, all comments are synced, but comments in longer threads that are hidden below "show more comments" are not synced as they consume additional requests to Reddit with very little content in return.

If there's interest, I can also add a feature that allows the bot to archive entire subreddits instead of retrieving the newest posts. Please feel free to ask for support to set up your personal bot and instance in the Leddit Lounge community.

Saw some posts on reddit about revanced patching some android reddit 3rd party apps like sync, rif, boost etc to enable users to use their api key or something to enable them to continue using their favorite app.

I have almost zero hopes but would love something where Apollo can be made usable again.

We’re about to enter another Reddit mass migration phase starting tonight. We’ve already attracted the users most actively engaged with the protests and Reddit’s changes—users who are driven enough to put in the effort to grow the Fediverse.

Now we need to make it feel like home to casual users and lurkers. Not just attract them for a few visits, but keep it interesting enough that they stay here in the coming weeks/months.

Major kudos to all the developers working day and night to bring us familiar-feeling apps and interfaces on insanely short timelines. But what can the rest of us do to make Kbin and Lemmy feel like home to all the new Reddit refugees? Populate Lemmy and Kbin with as much quality content as you can find!

Over the next few weeks, fill your magazines/communities with as much good the content as you can. Post comments and subscribe to things. Click that upvote button on content or comments you like.

Not sure where to find good content? Ironically, check out your favorite subreddits for ideas. Make sure we have the best of the content you can find on Reddit. See a good article or link? Post it here! Don’t be shy about posting to interactive communities like Ask Lemmy- we’re after volume.

For OC Reddit posts, see if there’s a non-Reddit page to post here. I don’t know whether it’s acceptable to copy text posts, but if you do, make sure you at least give credit/copy a link to the original post.

Basically, do everything you can to engage over the next few weeks and avoid lurking. Show off the Fediverse and welcome the next group of Reddit refugees to their new home.

Now For Reddit is going to go to a subscription service. It's not that popular but it's the one I like. I've not decided yet if I'm going to keep using it and pay for a subscription - it depends on how much per month it costs, for me the lack of NSFW isn't a deal breaker but Reddit's slimy behavior recently kind of is.

Reddit had cemented their resolve to pull a Digg. I really hope the migration goes as swiftly as it did all those years ago. Let the platform die and destroy the IPO. Fuck Spez.

I'm still learning the fediverse. Finding a good mobile app and waiting for the niche communities to populate. I look forward to a future with the failure of Reddit and the conquering of stubborn resolve.

Looks like Apollo is now dead boys and girls. Feels like having a loved one die

As much as I like browsing the Fediverse with Liftoff, RIF was just such a refined app. At the end RIF was what Reddit could have been.

Stuff barely ever loads now. API change active already? Other reason?

Sorry for the delay in updating everyone on the future of Relay. It's taken until now for me to work things out.

For the time being, Relay is going to be free for everyone to use (this means no fees and no ads) while i continue optimising API calls and finalising subscription prices. I'm working hard to get call volumes down and i'll try my best to hit as low a price point as possible, at least for a base tier that covers 85-90% of users. At the higher end of usage it's looking like i'll need to implement a few different price points but this is still something i need to figure out. I'll let you know when i do.

Thanks again for all the incredible messages over the last week. I've seen them all and they really mean a lot - knowing how long some people have been using Relay for is amazing. For anyone moving on from here, thanks for supporting Relay over the last 12 years - i'm forever grateful.

Seems DBrady got an exemption, Relay for Reddit will continue functioning for the time being, and will eventually move to a subscription model.

First off, yes, I'm getting rid of my account, but I decided to have a look around on the official app and

1. It's hot garbage
2. I'm subscribed to a bunch of subs I've never even interacted with before in my life. What gives? Did they just sign me up for shit without asking? They sent me emails after promising they wouldn't, they've lied about a lot of stuff, but every time I'm surprised they're such dicks for some reason.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello, I'm a reddit user since 2 years ago and i jumped ship on lemmy about a year ago. I still browse reddit for content I can't find over here (niche stuff mainly)

With the recent API disaster my favorite and only app (infinity) got switched to subscription only, let's just say i can't afford that right now. I've heard some apps will stick around for free thanks to reddit "generously" providing API access for free to a selected number of devs.

My question being: what apps will have this free API access and so will be around for free like infinity was just not long ago? (technically the switch happens at midnight but you all get my point)

I wish I had the skill to make a cover.
