I am predicting that before the company goes bankrupt, Reddit will remove downvotes in an effort to prevent users from expressing negative sentiment. This happened a few years ago on YouTube after YouTube Rewind became the world's most disliked video, several years in a row. This was embarrassing for the company because it revealed the discontent of the userbase.

Since expressing discontent is bad for their reputation, and manually removing dislikes is a time consuming task, removing the downvote button altogether for the sake of "preventing bullying" is likely the next step for Reddit.

r/mildlyinteresting, interestingasfuck, self, tihi, shittylifeprotips got their entire mod team nuked. More will probably follow today. You can request an unmoderated sub in r/redditrequest.

Don’t forget to wield your new powers with responsibility. Do not use this opportunity to backstab the fine folks at Reddit Inc. They are already going through a lot. Adopt your very own sub today!

PART 1

PART 2

"What the users want" my ass. Reddit doesn't give 2 shits about what the users want.

r/Pics is doing a new poll to divide their fate, the are 3 options:

  • Continue allowing only pictures of John Oliver looking sexy.
  • Allow any media of John Oliver.
  • Suspend all of /r/Pics' subreddit-specific rules.

They're just gonna set the sub on fire!

Remember that Reddit is essentially a glorified news aggregator that also allows memes and porn and has NFT avatars for some fucking reason.

As far as I know, adding the RSS feed of a subreddit will keep working as usual, unless spez gets wind of it and kills it too, so don't tell spez.

So, if you still need or want to read from a certain subreddit you can add /.rss at the end of the url. For example:

https://reddit.com/r/antiwork/.rss

I use newsboat on the desktop, because is a terminal based app and terminal based apps are BASED. There are many more fancy readers on desktop.

Also Feeder on mobile is pretty good, it's available on F-Droid.

With that and moving to lemmy you might break free of your reddit addiction and not fall into the trap of using the crappy official app just to watch dank memes.

Also forget about Karma. I have over 200K karma on Reddit that is utterly useless. Touching grass is more pleasing than getting karma. You can read something on reddit from your RSS feed while touching grass too, multitasking.

If you still have a reddit account, please hop in the reddit comments to show support.

Whether you used Sync or not, we could all use more app competition in this space.

In short, Reddit is killing off most third party apps and bots, like Apollo, which provided the moderation tools that let reddit's feed not be full of spam and garbage, and are what made this site even usable on mobile. They're doing this by charging insane amounts of money that no one will be able to pay (20 million dollars for apollo). They're also straight up lying about and insulting the app devs. Here's Apollo's dev debunking those lies.

This will also prevent blind, deaf, and people with other disabilities from engaging in discussions on Reddit.

People protested. First, subs were closed and privated, but were forced open by admins, so now they're protesting by only allowing John Oliver pics, or taking sub names literally.

Alot of them them have moved to Lemmy and kbin, which are both compatible with each other.

Reddit Sync's dev is now working on Sync for Lemmy instead. Artemis for kbin/Lemmy and Memmy for Lemmy are both heavily inspired by Apollo; Artemis will even be on both Android and IOS.

This picture explains simply how Lemmy and kbin work and how they're compatible; they are both part of the Fediverse.

Sub.rehab lists subreddits that have officially moved off of reddit. Honestly, just ignore the few that aren't on Lemmy or kbin. Just join the largest Lemmy or kbin community for full compatibility.

There's also Lemmynsfw.com for NSFW communities/subreddits (not listed in sub.rehab) that you can seamlessly access from any instance/server the same way explained in the picture linked above.

Just join any Lemmy or kbin server/instance to access everything; doesn't matter which because they're all connected. Lemmy.world, Lemm.ee, vlemmy.net, kbin.social, fedia.io are all great for example.

For subreddits you like that haven't moved off of reddit yet, send a polite message to the mods asking them if they plan to make the subreddit/community in Lemmy/kbin.

Copy/paste this summary anywhere relevant to spread the word.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has come out and said what legions of redditors feared – that a business plan to turn a profit by increasing the price of API access has been "reaffirmed" by a look at the Book of Musk.

Now to just need to replace all the other social media with open source

Think about it, open source twitter, open source tiktok, open source instagram

If we could get everyone to switch away from the corporate social media

I keep seeing communities on lemmy writing in their bio "not official" or in some way deferring to the reddit community. I also see them writing that they're willing to give up their community to the reddit mods if they ask. It's like the whole place has imposter syndrome.

We're the adults, guys.

We're here. This is our community now. We broke up with that site, and we are making a new one. Run your community the way you think it should be run. Their communities are not any more official than ours. This is our place, not theirs.

We're the adults. We're the mods. We're the community.

I'm still in the process of moving old saves off my Reddit account and found this gem today. Reddit HQ is coping hardcore, I can't image regular users actually care about this.
