I’ve really been impressed by the Reolink HA integration. You get access to so many camera features and options in the HA UI. The problem is that I have mostly Amcrest cameras at my house. Some Amcrest and Reolink cameras have similar features but the Amcrest plugin isn’t as feature-rich or polish. But why? Does the Amcrest plugin need more development? Does Reolink just give developers more access to camera features (they did join ‘Works with Home Assistant’)?

So this is driving me crazy. I'm trying to create automations in HA 2025.7.2 and they're doing weird stuff:

  • Some save but completely vanish from the automation list (but I can see them triggering in device logs??)
  • Others give me "New automation setup failed - timeout" even though config check passes
  • A few just show as "unavailable" for no reason

I've triple-checked everything - all entities exist, helpers are set up correctly, YAML looks fine. Some automations work perfectly fine when I create them, but others just randomly fail and go into this limbo state. It seems completely random which ones work and which don't.

The really weird part is when they "disappear" - they're not showing up in Settings > Automations, but I can clearly see them firing in the device logs. So they exist somewhere in the system but the UI can't find them? Where?

I've tried restarting multiple times, checked Developer Tools (config validation passes), verified all my entities are available. Nothing seems to fix it.

Found this thread describing a very similar issue, though that was on a different version.

Anyone else running into this? Is this a known bug in recent versions or am I missing something obvious? Where the hell do these phantom automations even get stored?

Getting really frustrated here...

Just want to add this event, as this could be interesting to some of you.

Upcoming community event and Z-Wave Long Range “real-life” test in Hungary on July 29, 2025. (Event language is English)

Location: Danubius Hotels Annabella, Balatonfured, Hungary https://www.danubiushotels.com/en/our-hotels-balatonfured/hotel-annabella Date: 2025.07.29. Tuesday

Agenda:

10:00 -12:00 "Testing" The environment: The hotel runs on Z-Wave devices, 6 floors, 386 rooms, 5 apartments. This will be noisy.

Test will run on Z-Wave.JS + Home Assistant (specifically prepared for this test).

The day will begin with an invitation-only morning session where a select group will conduct Z-Wave device and controller tests in real hotel conditions. This hands-on testing environment will give us valuable insights into how these technologies perform in practical, everyday scenarios. “Invitation-only” because there will be devices before release.

BUT!

From the afternoon (14-16:30), doors open for everyone to join. You'll see the actual test results and have the opportunity to talk directly with the experts who conducted them. No marketing filters, just raw data and honest conversations about what works, what doesn't, and why.

We've organized two panel discussions that tackle the questions we're all asking:

  1. A deep dive into the Z-Wave test results - what did we learn and what does it mean for future implementations?
  2. A frank conversation about interoperability in smart homes - beyond the buzzwords, what really creates seamless connections between different systems?

Panelists: Paulus Schoutsen, Open Home Fundation Dominic Griesel , Open Home Fundation Laszlo Urge, Silicon Labs Tamas Langh, Yabune Solution (Adam Kruzynski, Shelly Poland. Waiting for confirmation) Moderator: Peter Zsak, Smartopert

Afterwards (16:30-19:00), you'll have plenty of time to connect with fellow enthusiasts and experts in a relaxed lakeside setting. These informal conversations often lead to the most valuable insights and collaborations.

Claude has been hard at work and there are many updates since I first shared this project a few days ago. Still uses OpenAI's Realtime API + Picovoice wake words, still designed for Raspberry Pi setups (without the Billy Bass).

What's new since v0.5b:

MCP server integration support: No longer using HA's Conversation API, it now fully supports the official MCP server integration. Many thanks to u/balloob for suggesting this.

Web UI: The most common config change options are now available via an authenticated web UI, including wake word selection, custom wake word model upload, OpenAI voice selection, multi vs single turn conversation choice, and personality config. The assistant personality config is also available in the web UI. Finally, there's a basic status monitoring page so you can monitor interaction for testing or fun.

Default model: Thanks to u/XErTuX pointing out that gpt-4o-realtime-preview is expensive, the app now defaults to gpt-4o-mini-realtime-preview. This can be changed in the UI as well.

Bugs and things: Multi-turn audio has been greatly improved. I'm sure there are still bugs and edge cases to be identified, but it works well for my purposes.

Up next: Potentially supporting other MCP server configs to make it more useful.

Note: If you're running a version prior to these updates, I'd recommend a fresh install rather than trying to upgrade. The config structure has changed enough that it's easier to start clean.

Still targeting Raspberry Pi 3B+ or better. Testing on Pi 4 has been stable. The cheap USB mics work fine, added compatibility with USB audio interfaces. Automatic audio calibration handles most setups.

This remains a personal project. More stable than v0.5b but still beta software. You'll likely encounter issues.

Installation instructions and changelog are on GitHub.

I swear I've had the worst luck with smart bulbs over the years. I started with LIFX bulbs, which are fine, but I really wanted to go full local control (plus they're kinda pricy) so the next time I needed some smart bulbs, I bought Zigbee. I hated them. They refused to join the mesh network, only talking to the hub directly and I had to actually move my Home Assistant server to make them work. So this time when I needed smart bulbs, I took a chance on Linkind brand matter bulbs. After all, I've been hearing Matter is the new smarthome standard (and after using Tasmota switches, I've learned how awesome local-first wifi devices can be).

They're also terrible. They're incredibly slow to respond, hell, they sometimes don't respond at all. After having issues in Home Assistant I tested setting them up directly with Google Home to make sure it wasn't a HA-specific issue, and saw the same problems. They're just truly garbage as far as I can tell.

Has anyone had any good experience with Matter bulbs? And what brands/protocols does everyone here like when it comes to smart bulbs in general?

I always wanted to get into home automation, for years.

Last month I finally picked up a HA Green and a Zigbee hub, added all my “normal” devices. Everything was pretty exciting.

Since then, I’ve been thinking about which sensors to buy first, which automations etc, but so far I always end up thinking it’s a gimmick that solves a problem I don’t actually have. ☹️ Have I not got the right mindset for this?

Looking for ideas on how you started, and perhaps how you approach picking what automations to do.

I stumbled upon a new zigbee solar rain sensor (different than the flower looking one) I'm thinking about purchasing just because.

Could be useful in letting me know when there is light rain 3-4 times a year where it won't show up on any weather apps.

What do you do to help your future self remember which code or line of code does what?

Currently I have a folder on my gaming PC where I do dev work with comments and all in my .yaml files. When everything is ready for prod I just send the file to my HA machine and let it do its thing.

Just wanted to let you know that recently a github project has managed to integrate Home connect locally.

https://github.com/chris-mc1/homeconnect_local_hass

So far it has been working great! (I have just tried three days .. until i started major renovations at my apartment) but was working flawlessly.

Hey r/homeassistant!

I just wanted to share my experience setting up my first automation. I recently bought an AirThings air quality monitor to track CO2 and VOCs in my home. I found out that CO2 spikes once my wife and I get home, and eventually approaches 1200ppm in the middle of the night.

This had me worried. I started pricing ERVs to supply my home with fresh air (they're really expensive). I even bought a fan that sits sealed in my window frame to help out, but we all know how hot it is outside.

I had a eureka moment, integrated the AirThings into my homeassistant, then realized I could set up an automation to trigger my microwave's vent fan!

Basically, when CO2 rises above 800ppm, the fan activates on low speed. I created a second to turn it back off when ppm falls below 600 for at least ten minutes.

What are some of your most useful automations you've added to your HomeAssistant setup?

Just sharing my personal experience and opinion.

5 to 4 years ago I bought a few Shelly PM1s and installed 5. As of today, the last one failed. I'd say the others failed within 3-4 years. They were a pain to put in and pain to take out. I know Shelly has moved on in 5 years, but I'd think a bit before installing a bunch of these.

I still have 4 PM1's, a 2.5 and a Shelly Blue which I've never used, older models I know, but I'll never use these. Your mileage may vary.
