Last night after the Metallica concert, we were waiting for the LRT. The train came, but it was out of service. No one got on. The second train came and again, out of service. At this point, people are frustrated. Being at the end of the platform, we were close enough to hear the train operator telling people on the platform that too many people were puking on the trains, which is why they were out of service. Finally, the third train came and we were able to squeeze on.

Do people not know their limits? Do they not care? Why were entire trains shut down instead of just the carts that had puke in them? So many questions.

What's Up Edmonton! Once a week I go through most events happening in and around our beautiful city over the coming week, and then send a large list out to my friends. I thought I should share it here.

Get this & 40+ other events as a weekly email update:

Note: The linked publication is ad free & non-monetized. Use it as a directory of things to do as we reconnect in our communities. I send it out every Tuesday morning.

Note: My work schedule is getting wacky for the next while. Hence me sending this post tonight. Next week could follow in suite... not sure yet.

P.S. To all of you who regularly read the publication, send me emails and read/respond to these reddit posts... you folks rock! Thanks for all the positive feedback. It means a lot = )

5 cool events this weekend:

  • Alberta Day (Multiple Locations)
  • The Peace & Unity Festival
  • Sounds of the Valley
  • Women in Ninja
  • Disney in Concert (ESO)

Alberta Day (Multiple Locations)

In recognition of our beautiful province, Alberta Day celebrates all that makes Alberta unique. Depending on where you go, you'll find a slew of things to see & do for free. Around YEG:

Edmonton Legislature Grounds: See a host of Edmontonian musicians & performers (headlined by Scenic Route To Alaska), a made-in-Alberta vendor market, a kids zone, cultural workshops & other hands on activities. Oh... and an epic drone show.

Fort Saskatchewan: Enjoy complimentary refreshments, live music & performances, history-based activities & a vendor market. Additionally, Culture & Recreation Facilities are offering free admission, including to drop-in fitness classes & sports. Plus... other stuff.

Spruce Grove: Enjoy a performance from the Canadian Forces SkyHawks, as well as from artist Martina Dawn.

Enjoy the time with family & friends = )

The Peace & Unity Festival

Aiming to foster understanding and connection amongst Edmonton's diverse communities, the Peace & Unity Project brings us this (honestly) pretty awesome, free event. Bringing you 17 performers and 9+ speakers from very different backgrounds, this free, all day event will be the place to be to hatch friendships and see a myriad of cultures in action. Following the festival, The Project will be creating a film series, and hosting further meetups & future events.

Sounds of the Valley

Wrapping up another fantastic season, this free event grants local musicians & (other) artists a chance to strut their stuff, supported by a very enthusiastic crowd. For this final event of the 2024 series, onlookers will enjoy a performance from the highly talented, local musician Lily Monaghan. Additionally, there'll be book readings from local writers Frey Catton & Jon Lai, while Jan Xu will be painting masterpieces. If you decide to attend (and I highly recommend it), be sure to bring a lawnchair, extra water & something mobile to deter those pesky wasps. If you do get hungry & forget to bring snacks, I believe Snow Valley's cafe has been open for this event.

Women in Ninja

This weekend, head to WEM's Ice Palace to see this UNAA World Finals Qualifier. Inspired by American Ninja Warrior, this sport features a massive obstacle course through which (female) athletes race, trying to reach the other side quicker than their competitors. This event features 3 stages (speed, strength & finals) and encompasses several age categories. The top three finalists will qualify for UNAA Season 10.

Now, here's the best part. For $73, any local females can register & compete in this. You have until tomorrow to do so, before registrations close. For the rest of us, this event is free to watch, of course, barring any expenses you accumulate en route to The Ice Palace (haha).

Disney in Concert (ESO)

Next weekend, head down to Churchill Square for two nights of Disney presented by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This event is free, so arrive early, bring a lawn chair on which to sit, extra water and snacks, maybe blankets (if the night is cool) and again... arrive early. This incredible performance packs the house every year.

Have a fantastic weekend, folks.

Reminder to all, only cross the street when safe and keep an eye on the approaching vehicles. The pedestrian loses every single time, this lady lost her life.

My girlfriend and I purchased a home last month without realizing flippers owned the house before the sellers. Ultimately this turned out to be a very costly mistake as I've already spent almost a thousand in wiring as the flippers were either a handyman or somebody with little to no electrical experience. As such I'm currently fixing it up for myself and I'm pulling and terminating new wire throughout the home, I am a licensed electrician and I can say for certain that none of this work would have ever passed an inspection. It's not just preference, I'm talking about complete code violations, the biggest one that I've seen is open air splices in the Attic which contains wood chips and cellulose- aka a fire hazard. I could tell before the purchase the home that it was a handyman but I did not realize the purchase history as unfortunately, the market is too hot for you to make judgments and calls like that. I did get an inspector as per my girlfriend's request and he didn't notice any of it which is a reason why I hate inspectors. It took me 15 minutes in the attic to spot these glaring issues which they did not. Not only that, all the new cable that was pulled was largely not terminated correctly or scored so it was shorting out on the box which was also missed by the inspectors.

This is also the second home my family has been burned by flippers. My sister purchased a home before covid not completely grasping how shoddy flippers are and yet again they did very illegal things. Such as incorrectly splicing neutrals causing lighting issues, covering up the water main with drywall with no access hatch, and covering the outside of the water shut-off, which caused a pipe to burst and flood her basement.

Ultimately if I had known a flipper was involved I would've moved on, as I had while looking at other house listings. The sad part is I know for a fact others are getting burned too cause I've seen listings while I was looking and was able to immediately pick out a flip without looking deep into the history cause of the utility room pictures. They would never pass an inspection with those "upgrades".

Total code violations found so far:

  • Furnance disconnect not accessible(mounted to a joist 8.5 feet up, behind the furnace which you had to walk around the furnace to access)
  • Stove fed via 2 single pole 40 amp breakers
  • no smoke detector interconnection throughout the home, many areas also missing them
  • new kitchen plugs pulled on a single 15 amp breaker(Not split, also shared throughout the home)
  • 5 open air splices(2 in the attic)
  • no neutral landed in any switches
  • Covering junction boxes(3 I've spotted so far after ripping out drywall)
  • Not enough wire in each plug box(most were around 2.5 inches in the box, I could barely get them outside the box)
  • incorrect stapling of wires(some had no staples at all)

I cannot stress this enough, the code is MINIMUM EFFORT NEEDED, you can do better than the code easily.

Tldr: Flippers do shit work and cut corners, don't buy from them if you value your money or time.

On the afternoon of Friday August 23, my boyfriend had a bad bike accident on the 109 street bridge. Whoever called an ambulance for him, thank you so much, you are an angel. He is going to be okay, a couple of broken bones and a few nights in hospital but his helmet did its job.

Also, whoever later found his glasses and tucked them out of way by a beam so we could find them later, thank you. You are also awesome.

While the accident was scary, the kindness of the people of Edmonton has reaffirmed that he made the right choice by moving here. Thank you

Reposted with proper language since somehow my original post broke the /edmonton rules.

I want to alert the community about a very disturbing experience my friend had recently at Zillionaires Lounge. While celebrating a birthday, she was led by someone to a hidden room in the establishment that had a deadbolt on the door. Thankfully, a friend noticed something was wrong and was able to get help before things escalated further.

This is extremely concerning, and I believe the community should be aware of the potential dangers at this venue. If anyone has experienced anything similar or has any information, please report it to the appropriate authorities.

We should hold places like this accountable and ensure they are safe for everyone.

Edit: For the people who commented about reporting to EPS, why post on reddit? This post is to share awareness, so if you hear your daughter going to this place. Tell them about the hidden room and the predatory advantages this place has.

I just wanted to let everyone know that today is Lemonade Stand Day. The money raised is going to the Stollery Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre. There's likely kids in your neighbourhood selling lemonade and cookies! Go support them! 💜💛

You can look up the closest lemonade stand to you here:

I have been applying for what feels like every part time job posted the last month and a half and haven’t had one call/email for an interview what is happening in the job market right now. It’s frustrating seeing the same positions being posted and reposted. Do I actually have to go old school and apply for these jobs in person? I’m not applying for jobs that require a lot of experience. (dishwasher, retail)

I finally convinced my parents to go there today and they're, quite literally, dumbfounded. I am trying to explain the magic of H&W but need more info about their supply chain. All I know is that they source locally, from the items that the chains don't buy, but what about internationally? Example - they got eight 2lb boxes of strawberries for $15 and they are good berries. Please help - I can't attribute it to the devil 😂
