I was thinking like what will happen to all the data once you are not there? Is it like you have thought to pass it to someone.

I've got a spare laptop or two that's just sitting there doing nothing right now so I decided to spin them up and do some seeding for Anna's Archive.

Well. I've downloaded the magnet links and they are on my computer now, 0 uploads for the week.

What....what even is the point of this exercise?

Just counted—I've got around 131 movies stashed away, most clocking in at about 10 GB each. That’s well over a terabyte of cinematic intentions that somehow never make it off the drive and onto the screen. It’s not like I don’t want to watch them. I just… don’t.

Even with everything neatly sorted in Plex, I’ll spend more time browsing than actually watching anything. Sometimes I try to spice it up with a random picker, but that usually ends with me questioning my own taste in downloads.

To make things worse, I keep defaulting to streaming on Netflix instead. Something about knowing the downloaded stuff is “always there” makes it feel less urgent. Meanwhile, Netflix keeps throwing autoplay at me and suddenly I’m three episodes deep into something I didn’t even plan to watch. The hoard just keeps growing.

Honestly, I think I’ve started collecting more for the thrill of the hunt than for the viewing itself. It’s weirdly satisfying seeing the folders grow—even if my watchlist guilt grows along with it.

Anyone else living in quiet denial with a beautifully curated backlog you barely touch? Or do some of you actually make a dent in yours? Teach me your ways.

Is it me or does it seem that there are more new companies offering NAS in the last 6 months than ever before? As if we’ve gone from about 4-6 to over a dozen over night. None are at a price point that stands out, just competing on features. I guess time will tell.

I have 5 5tb portable drives full of data. The biggest files are video are around 3 gb. Much of it is duplicate for obvious reasons. I've recently picked up a 20 tb drive from go hard drive. I'm looking for the fastest way to copy all my data to the 20tb. Currently all drives are usb. I could throw together a quick desktop with usb3 and drop the 20tb in it. I could install windowz or a linux distribution. I also have a spare laptop that could be utilized. There's 10 ways to skin a cat. What's your preferred method? Thank you in advance. My ultimate goal is to set up true nass and I'd like to not have to erase my hard drive when I set up the pools. Currently just planning on mirrored drives.

Edit: I threw together a desktop, installed Linux Mint on an ssd, and am using Rsync to transfer from usb hard drive to the 20tb mounted internally.

This is my command: rsync -ahP [source] [destination]

I was thinking of using: rsync -av --info=progress2 [source] [destination]

I'll just let it run all night.

I appreciate everyone's input. There were more options than I thought. Some I'll use all the time.

In the last couple of weeks, Adventure Gamers—a beloved game site dedicated to point-and-click adventure gaming since 1998—has become a cruel pastiche of its former self. The site, primarily run by volunteers and enthusiasts, has fought for the much-maligned adventure gaming genre through thick and thin for almost three decades, but visit today and you’ll find more “reviews” of gambling sites and slot machine games than the latest adventure releases. And for an extra kick in the shins, the new owners wiped twenty years of forum posts without warning. How did any of this happen?

I'm looking to build a new desktop PC and I'm not sure if I'm going to install an optical drive in it. It seems kind of pointless because even though I have tons of CD's and DVD's that I burned over the years way back, I can't remember needing to read one in probably 5 years. The important stuff that's on them has long been ripped to mkv's/iso/etc and backed up to my janky 42TB "NAS" (that I definitely need to upgrade but that's a project for later).

Still, it would be nice to have access to them as they are still a last resort backup of some my data.

I set up my first NAS a year ago and bought 3x8TB WD Red Plus drives direct from WD, and they were £209 each (Before discounts). Now I'm looking at the page and they're £180 each, exact same model number.

Do hard drives normally drop in price like this? Is there a chance they go up in price? I'm almost out of storage so need to buy one, making me wonder if I should buy two in case this model gets discontinued or rise in price or something.

Just found out about this — apparently some super cheap Android-based TV boxes come with pre-installed malware.

The FBI recently issued a public warning about it. The malware (called BadBox) can steal login credentials, access WiFi, and communicate with command-and-control servers.

It made me think twice about some of the random electronics I’ve ordered online in the past.

Worth checking if you’ve bought these kinds of devices recently.

My porn collection was just absurdly large, 220TB.

I decided to finally setup Tdarr and throw in a bunch of cheap intel arc GPU's to encode to AV1. I was nervous because i'd heard it's a pain to setup but for my scenario it was ridiculously easy, no complex flows, just encode and replace. It is very good at handling failed encodes.

It took a good year of 24/7 encoding but I went from 220TB to only 88TB. I was literally able to build a backup array with the space I saved and then have drives left over. I'll never notice the quality difference, I wasn't even able to in the few test files I compared at the beginning.

Story time

It started as a simple backup NAS. A simple 2 bay Synology. This was in 2019 or so.

Soon a 5 bay extension unit was added, so I could rip my dvd and make a media server.

The NAS cpu wasn’t good enough as my library grew. So a minipc was added.

By this time I also started to datahoard stuff. Some of it didn’t need much space, like backing up all of gamefaqs or that one subtitle site that closed. Other did occupy a lot, like photo archives, old Linux ISOs, etc.

The minipc wasn’t enough anymore either if I wanted to host a few more docker stuff. So 2 more were added for a proxmox cluster.

And now I notice how every year I consume 7-10TB, requiring to spend 400€ on yet another HDD. Which I can barely afford, I live in Spain and I am not swimming in money right now.

Talking about Spain: it get effing hot here. Dusty too. Right now it’s 30ºC outdoor. 28º inside with a/c off. 32º in my office. A freaking oven.

The cpus are at 60º, the HDD at around 45-48º, the electric bill is through the roof (because other appliances as well to be fair) and don’t even get me started of running a/c almost 24/7 in the summer

Now I need to upgrade HDD again. If only serverpartsdeals had a warehouse in the EU. shipping and import tax almost doubles costs. I find a decent Toshiba somewhere like 60€ cheaper than an EXO but then I read bad opinions about Toshiba.

It is at this time that I feel “too old (and poor) for this shit” and my wife comes in and sees me pulling my hair out while comparing prices and reading reviews while sweating like a pig at 27°C (a/c was on)

“What’s wrong?”

And after I explain

“Why don’t you just delete some stuff?”

Yeah. Why don’t I?

I have a fairly big optical collection that I maintain and I still burn optical from time to time.

I do understand the risks and the issues regarding optical media, with the size limitations and possible low longevity. However I do enjoy using optical for SOME things still despite having plenty of HDs and SSDs...

However something that's has been bugging me for some time, especially after Sony announced ceasing it's production of BDRs recently, for how long will optical media production last?

When will it become unprofitable to the point of no longer being produced, to the detriment of those who still use it?

I know most optical media if not all, including CDRs, DVDrs and BDRs are almost all exclusively produced in Asia, but with the ongoing trend of streaming and more and more places getting internet access, and also the dying state of official DVDs and Blurays, i wonder if in the next 10-15 years or more, even less maybe, optical media stops production completely.

Basically the final nail in the coffin, making it fully dead media, as in having no new products or releases whatsoever.

What are your opinions on this? Do you believe that somehow there will be a reason to continue to produce this media?

If someone wants to upload ISOs of any discs they have to the Internet Archive that would be great. Season 2 is what I have so far. This is preservation, not piracy. These are from 2012 and have not been available for sale in many years.

Nobody has shared the full DVD box set ISO images and seasons 1 and 3 are very expensive and hard to find. If you have any discs from Seasons 1 and 3, please consider uploading and sharing them. You can upload your own item to Archive.org or share a link and I will add it to my item and give you credit. Of the 3 popular Nickelodeon sitcom series, (All That, Kenan & Kel, and The Amanda Show) only the latter has ever had a home media release.

Video game companies are destroying video games, and soon as support ends the game can become unplayable such as The Crew. Which is unethical and frustrating to the players who still wanted to play the game. However there's a movement called Stop Killing Games. It's political movement aimed at tacking the industry issue at large and we need your help. By helping you able to keep your games. The movement takes place within the EU and UK. Only citizens can vote for the innative. The movement is NOT asking for games to be supported endlessly but instead have some end of life plan. There's two games that come in mind that I have personal experience in. Spellbreak community edition and Knockout City. If you have anymore question the FAQ can answer them or the FAQ video can. I would highly recommending to vote if you can.
