RTFA

Articles from across the web. Have you read something interesting and want to share it and talk about it? This is the place to do it. Don't be scared to post something with meat. We like reading and aren't scared off by needing to spend 10 minutes reading. In fact, we celebrate that!

Rules:

  1. Read the Fucking Article before you comment. If it's obvious you are just replying to the headline with your two cents and haven't even read the article, don't whine if your comment is removed.
  2. No Politics. There are a thousand other communities for that.
  3. Articles should be at least 1,000 words! We'll be a little lenient on this if the article/discussion is interesting, but if your post is a headline and a paragraph, it will probably be removed.
  4. Aussie.Zone Rules apply. This is a nice place, and we're pretty quick to stomp on nastiness.

A bit usa centric at points, but similar things happened here and the commentry on the flaws in/breakdown of the IRBO is good.

The Australian government sends weaponry to Israel while insisting that supplying parts for a gun and gun maintenance components isn't sending weapons powers city with eyerolling.

At first, Ziz LaSota seemed much like any other philosophically inclined young tech aspirant. Now, she and her followers are in jail, six people are dead, and Rationalists are examining whether their ideas played a role.

Our latest annual inequality report, “Takers Not Makers” explores how most billionaire wealth is taken, not earned - with 60% coming from either inheritance, cronyism or monopoly power. Furthermore, our deeply unequal world remains colonial in many ways. There is a long history of colonial domination which has largely benefited the richest people. This system still extracts wealth from the Global South to the super-rich 1% in the Global North at a rate of $30million an hour. This must be reversed.

To contribute to meaningful systemic change, governments must:

  • Radically reduce inequality – setting global and national goals to do so.
  • Repair the wounds of historical colonialism through apology and reparations
  • End systems of modern-day colonialism.
  • Tax the richest to end extreme wealth.
  • Promote South-South cooperation and solidarity.
  • End ongoing formal colonialism in all forms.

I don't know if i'm fully there with this advice. Some of it sounds like the writer wants you to be more monotone than you feel. To control the way you express your reactions.

Expressing your own emotional reactions to/in front of a child is surely important in their development.

That said, the writer's key point about accidentally switching a child's motivations for learning things through the parent's actions is well put.

Sometimes, these companies" (big tech) "really are looking out for your interests. They have armies of moderators and security experts who block innumerable threats to your data, your identity, and your physical safety. But those companies will never block you from their own leadership: when your interests conflict with their plans, the fortress walls that keep bad guys out become prison walls that lock you in.

I know that this was a pretty popular article on the fediverse, but i just think its so well written.

What a well written paragraph. I love the analogy with fiddler on the roof as well. Subject matter is of course interesting to a denizen of AZ.

If you want to suddenly re-evaluate the place you live, and the way your living in it. Its a bit 15 minute cities-esque without the popular narrative.

I am very glad that I met my wife before Online Dating became common. I would be utterly lost in today's dating app world.
